Then, of course, you get the other type of doctor who wants to do this, that and the next test, without the results of these changing anything. As some of the members may know, I have a rather strange and convoluted medical situation, aside with my stoush with breast cancer. I have three autoimmune conditions, one of which causes all the connective tissue in my body to become inflamed, and then scarred and rigid. It affects my lungs, heart, kidneys, blood vessels, muscles, nerves, tendons...the lot. Basically connective tissue sticks shit to shit, and that shit is stuffed. I did get peripheral neuropathy from taxol, but I had a degree of it before, and it continues to deteriorate. For the nerves in my legs, I'm a mystery. The little rubber hammer gets no response whatsoever at the knees or the ankles and I also have an abnormal Babinski response in the soles of both feet. Basically, according to the books, I shouldn't be able to walk at all as I have no deep nerve conduction happening. Granted. I do use a wheeled granny walker when out, but use it more as a cage around me to stop other fools bowling me over. Anyhoooo this one neurologist wanted to do a barrage of tests on me, including muscle and nerve biopsies (ouch) and also electrical nerve conduction studies (also ouch). When I asked him why did he want to do them, would the results change my treatment, or give them other ideas not yet thought of? "No," he said..."But it would scratch my intellectual itch about how you can walk even although you should be in a wheelchair". I told him I'd get him a scratching post from the pet shop. I don't mind students learning on me, but if any of that involves rubber gloves and KY Jelly, or sharp little knives or needles...no way. He looked most disappointed.
