'Thug' was our resident male magpie for nearly a decade. Last year he decamped for places unknown and his wives--fickle witches that they are--found a new man, "Toy Boy', and set up house in a new nest. No-one has bothered to tinker with the old family fortress (a full time job in years gone by) and last night it fell out of the tree.
I now know why baby magpies spend so much time squawking; sitting in this could not be comfortable. The nest weighs over 2kg and is made almost entirely from wire and whippersnipper cord. The challenge now is to find some suitably arty way to preserve it. I think it is a masterpiece. Thanks, Thug.
