WHY?

Why do Oncologists send you off for CT/Bone scans & tumour marker blood tests & tell you not to come back & see them for 2 months??

Do they not understand the incredible amount of stress they put you under doing that? That it creates extra anxiety & sleepless nights......... I wonder how they would like it if it were them.

  • to put your mind at ease I am pretty sure they will call you if there is a problem with your results. but I know what you mean, stressing but I always say 'no news, is good news'. You could always ring and ask to speak to your doctors about the results if you want to put your mind at ease, I have done that.

  • Good on you Cate.  Its a continuing learning curve hey.  As a breast nurse said to me, you have to tell our docs how much info you want as some ladies would prefer to not know.  I am still learning what will worry me and what I want to know, sounds dumb but who cares.  But now I have down pat - they mention tests the first thing I say is "when can I get the results".

  • Thanks Alice, I can only hope she would contact me if there was anything to be concerned about in the results.

Hopefully they dont leave it till their meeting before the clinic I am scheduled for to read them.

Thanks for the chocolate, just what I needed.

  • Hi Pam,

I was at Day Oncology yesterday for my monthly bone injection & I spoke with the nurse there about it, she told me to discuss the stress it causes for me with the Oncologist at my next visit & make her aware of how it affects my life. So I am going to do that, my husband will come with me to be my second voice & tell her how stressed out I get from it.

I need to be more vocal I feel & make it known at the time she suggests these things that I am not comfortable with.

Its very difficult to bring appointments forward I have found, not without the Onc's say so.

  • Hi cate 64  Know what you mean. I had a scan on my thyroid when diognosed with thyroid probs. (just out of treatment)  Said to the doc I will come in and pay for an appt to get results asap.  She said she'd ring - 8 days after the appt I got the generic letter to come and get results (Friday, stuffed up my weekend), only to find out she got the results 2 days after.  Another time my radio onc sent me for a bone scan re pain, when I rang her(after 5 days) she was on hols for 2 weeks - and no I'm just a receptionist cant give you any info!!!     Even ordinary tests I want to know - not I'll call you if a problem - I want a date that the results are in, and a call/visit!!!   I want an end to the stress...

Can you call your onc and ask when the results are in and what they are?   Maybe they don't realise the stress.  Maybe they need to realise...we are paranoid and have every right to be paranoid.

    Best wishes Pam

  • hi Cate64,

YES it does cause us all a lot of stress.... But think of it this way they get the results and if there is something they are very concerned about they would re book our appointment.

If it is your regular review etc it is routine... I would rather they check than not check...

Breathe girl and Let go if you can .....

HUGS and lots of chocolate from me;)
