Which specialist do I ask?

hi everyone, I'm new to this site and after reading a few discussions I thought I'd be brave...

in in a nutshell; if you have questions about your prognosis or long term treatment, which oncologist/. Specialist do you ask? I see my surgeon and chemo onc and gp regularly and have met the radiation onc and will see her again for my planning session. There is also a breast care nurse who I see each chemo session.

I'm on leave from work at the moment and when income protection rang me and asked a few appropriate questions I felt quite ignorant... Where would you start? Anything in hindsight you wished you asked?

thanks

  • Thanks everyone, I guess because I see the surgeons the most I'm never sure who to ask questions because they seem to only know their area.  I'm seeing my gp today and I'll see if he has the bigger picture.

I spoke to to my chemo oncologist yesterday about my category for the income protection and she was reluctant to discuss it and said it would have to go through a secretary who could run it past legals... They said they were happy to do all the paperwork when it needs renewing though. I guess I'm just curious about my prognosis but until chemo is over and they do more testing its not really known.
  • Hello @HappyGilmour welcome to the online network. The members are just wonderful and will be able to help you with any questions you may have, so ask away.
  • i also ask most of my questions to my oncologist too, have not see my surgeon since my surgery which was late last year.

my oncology radiologist I only saw for the period of treatment, they don't tend to be part off the longer term care team

I always bounce off things with my GP if I want a second opinion

  • Regarding Income Protection, my GP is the one who completes my regular reports. He's like the centre of my health team - all involved communicate well with each other and any scans/tests/reports are always copied to them all. I feel like I'm in good hands and feel well informed. Best wishes to you as you move through your treatment .
  • I always made a list to take with me,, I asked most of questions to oncologist as well. If you see breast care nurse more ask her, good luck with treatment xx
  • Hi there, I generally ask most of my questions to the oncologist. I find that they are the ones who know the answers to these type of questions. Good luck. Karen xox
