@dodg113 Hi there! I had DCIS in left breast in 2011, Lumpectomy, radiation and tamoxifen for 4yrs. 2015 I had a recurrence in the same breast 2.5cm tumor IDC, I underwent chemo and Arimidex then switched to Aromasin. In Feb 2017 by recommendation from my Oncologist, I had a single mastectomy with immediate Diep Flap reconstruction.I just couldnt risk another recurrence. I had Genetic Testing and they agreed that it was negative and that a double mastectomy wasn't warranted.
I've just reached my 5 year clearance of my right breast. If anything happened to this one, I have no issues in another mastectomy and recon to match. I couldnt have an implant due to the radiation damage. For me? the surgery was a much better outcome as opposed to the damage that treatments have done. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but then I also believe we make the right decisions at the right time for ourselves.
