What helped for nausea ?

hi all.  I'm struggling with nausea during chemo.  I figured there is a massive amount of lived experience and 'what worked for me' out there.   Hoping people can include what helped them and we can create a resource to help me and everyone else battling chemo nausea.  Thanks.

  • thanks everyone, great suggestions.  I did check the ginger beer we had at home and it doesn't contain any real ginger!  Interesting hey.

I find the boiled eggs help, and as someone else said just a mouthful of food seems to help the nausea.

Ive got medication but if I can manage the light nausea times without more drugs I prefer that. Thanks everyone

  • My oncologist prescribed me 4 anti nausea drugs and Told me to take the Dex an extra day. I also found that I had heartburn so got Pariet for that. (Don't forget prunes or a laxative!)

foodwise - I forced myself to drink lots of water to flush it out. I put lemon in the water. I drank ginger ale. Couldn't stand the ginger tea. I ate water crackers and Lebanese bread.

Other thIngs I did - I sucked on Lebanese bread (having something in my mouth stopped the nausea momentarily). Going outside, going for a walk helped. I didn't try and eat healthy until the nausea went (days of nausea is hard enough!)

i counted the days till it was over.

    Best wishes.

  • Hi OldDuck

I'm on round 2 chemo - hopefully handle stuff better this time round.  I'm not a great pill taker!  I'm on Dexamethasone and Maxalon and this seems to be doing well for nausea.  I've also been told to eat Ginger Nut biscuits by Chicks in Pink at Mater. GP also advised ginger is great with chemo.  But I'd be making a call to your oncologist over any niggly questions.  I've found my guy to be great with changing meds if I need it and even the pharmacist where I have chemo has answered medication queries for me.  Take care!

  • Hello Old Duck  Well once again there are some good responses here.   I had very mild  nausea over the whole 8 cycles of chemo - really lucky hey - but recently (18 mths after chemo I add), I was getting upset tummys, constipation, diarrhoea and nausea -remember thinking the constipation especially was like during chemo.  Then I remembered I had stopped taking the probiotics, that I had been taking since pre chemo,  just  a couple of weeks before - my physio suggested I start taking them again - and it worked, the troubles have gone.  So thinking maybe the probiotics helped - don't know but if your onc okays maybe worth a try.  Maybe someone else has had similiar.

  • Hi Old Duck,

Sorry to hear about your nausea. I finished AC end of August. I was quite nauseous for the first week after each cycle.  I was prescribed maxalon and dexamethasone.  There are many different anti nausea medications so it's good to keep in contact with the chemo unit and not wait til the next cycle. I was also prescribed Ativan which has a good anti nausea  and sedative effect for nights. Despite being really queasy, I would go out for a walk for an hour every morning. Ginger beer, jelly and ice blocks for hydration. I tended to mostly have soups, Asian inspired noodle soup which was light and had ginger and chicken soups.

I kept a diary of low nauseous I was which helped when talking to the chemo team.  Remember don't suffer in silence, don't wait til the next cycle & ring your chemo unit.

    Take care,

    Karen xx

Hi Old Duck, it sounds really strange, but found that a boiled egg helped me at times. Also, my hubby cut up some cantaloupe and left it in the fridge for me to nibble on when I was up to it. I reckon you should talk with your oncologist, as there might be an alternative medication that you can use that makes a difference. Hoping that you're feeling better soon, sending you a big cuddle, Trace ??????

  • Hi Old duck

i sufferred terribly with nausea and sickness throughout chemo. You definitely need to speak to your onc.  For me, they ended up changing the carboplatin to cyclophosphomide, gave me ondansetron wafers and gave me higher doses of cortisone for a longer duration than normal. It certainly didn't stop the nausea but it reduced it substantially and meant that  I didn't have to spend extra time in hospital dealing with constant vomiting.  Ginger can also work sometimes although I found it made no difference to chemo nausea. I hope it all starts to settle down for you soon. Take care. Karen xox

  • Hello, it’s Lisa from the Policy Team. I’m very sorry to hear that you are struggling with nausea from the chemotherapy you are taking. You may have already, but it would be best to talk to your medical oncologist or your chemotherapy nurses about the nausea you’re experiencing. There is a range of different anti-nausea options which may help, but these are best supervised by your treatment team.

    Warm regards,
    Lisa
