Waiting to feel well again....

Hi everyone, I am 5 weeks after finishing chemo, 6 sessions, 3 x FEC and 3 X Doxytaxel.  My body has been really knocked around by the chemo and now my head seems to be following.  I cant stop crying at anything really and still feel really unwell and aching all over.  Had bone density test and it shows I have osteoporosis.  Looked up Doxytaxel side effects and one of them is thinning of bones.  As i used to be (and will be again) a regular runner and have been running for years, I am in shock to find out that I have osteo.  Just want to feel well again and it isnt happening for me.  Seems that I got a lot of the side effects of chemo but I am grateful to be still here so I am not really complaining.  Just feel crap.  I want to be feeling well before I start on the Arimidex but am now worried that it is the wrong drug for me given the osteo.  My hair started to grow back white and now that is falling out and it is dark brown underneath.  Does anyone know if this is usual to lose the first growth and is the second growth the colour that stays???  I feel like the longer I am on this medical merry go round the more things that go wrong with my body.  My body used to be my friend and now i feel that I no longer trust it.  Sorry about the rave, just needed to vent.

  • Hi Louisa

I know how you feel that your treatment is over and really want to start feeling on top of it all again.

I also am now 7 weeks post chemo and in middle of radiotherapy and I can say I only just starting to feel okay.  I am walking to & fro from radiotherapy appts etc. so on some days I can walk 80 mins which is split up.  It has made a difference to how I am feeling BUT!!! if I not up to it I won't do it.  I trying to listen to my body (yes that body that let me down) and do what I can when I can.  It is so hard and unfortunately patience is needed.

Osteo is not nice but again managable once you know how.  I think it is weight bearing exercises that is good for osteo??.  My sister has R.A. & O.A. diagnosed when she was 35 and she is now 64 but it has never held her back from the majority of things she wants to do.  I think the combination of her age and abusing her body over the years is finally starting to take its toll but she has been amazing.

My hair started to sprout (lol) before I finished my last cycle of the horrid Docetaxel - the chemo that really knocked me about.  It is very wispy with a mix of white and dark hair coming through.  I am getting mine shaved again though (not giving mine a chance to fall out again hee hee) so it can grow through minus the chemo that may still be lurking in my system.  If my hair grows back how it was it needs all the help it can get. I can notice it growing week by week.

I do understand what you mean about the longer you are on this journey the more things go wrong, one of my things being lymphodeama plus quite a few others.  You do ask youself when it is all going to end, I agree.

Good luck, hope you get on to a good specialist for your osteo and you get beautiful hair sprouting soon.

    Mich xoxo

  • Thanks for listening.  Great to know that your hair returned to normal eventually.  I am usual a pretty up beat girl but I have to admit that this has knocked me.  I am grateful to be in recovery mode and not the alternative which a lot of our fellow sufferers dont get a choice about.  Water aerobics would be good but I am not near a pool and live in a country town.  That is why running has always been the best thing for me cos you only need yourself and one foot in front of the other.  I will keep pushing myself and get my mojo back.  I have been blessed by family and friends and really have nothing to moan about.  hair is only hair and will grow back eventually.  Thanks again for listening.  I hope you have recovered.  Cheers for now,  Louisa :)

  • Vent all you like here- I think it helps somehow. You've been through the mill so it takes awhile to get your mojo back.I had Docetaxil and it's really hard on the hair follicles.I waited 10 weeks before I saw the first few hairs come through - I was beside myself! My  hair came through a dark mousy colour and very curly. I am back to my old hair colour and style now-took about 18mths.I used to be active too but a broken ankle and then bc treatments have left me abit on the sedentary side.My physio said if you can't run then find some other activity you can manage - thinking of water aerobics. That's my trouble -I do alot of thinking about it!! Sorry to hear you have some osteoporosis-what a bugger. I have to take Tamoxifen and I believe that actually helps with osteo. Maybe you can have that one instead- talk to your doctor. This rotten breast cancer ride with all it's treatments leaves you mentally and physically depleted doesn't it.I hope you get your energy back soon,I'm sure you will.
