unexpected visit to ED!

Hi from Adelaide!

Just a short note to say hello to everyone. All was going along well, albeit slowly, but still getting better each day until I had a minor hiccup yesterday.

Nothing much to worry about I thought when I noticed the bandage (and acticoat) from my abdominal wound was starting to come off in the middle bit of the abdomen. After I had my shower I noticed the bandage coming off and therefore saw that part of the wound was sticky and pussy (pus was oozing out). Sorry i can't think of how to describe it any other way! LOL. Got a bit of the hyperflex bandage to stick on so my wound didn't become fully exposed. I rang my plastic surgeon's rooms and spoke to the nurse and described my symptoms. She suggested I get to a nurse to get it cleaned and redressed. Well I happened to be volunteering at the hospital (FMC) at this time and headed up to the emergency department.

The nurse told me that the wound had become infected and I needed a doctor review. This doctor was very nice and spoke to Dr Marshall about was happening. After my wound was cleaned and redressed, I was ready to go home. PHEW...:) Seeing Dr Marshall tomorrow too for follow-up post op appt.

So, resting up today (ie not moving any furniture like I did on Tuesday...not very heavy mind you..haha). Anybody else who had a similar procedure had any infections (ie pus) or similar?

Cheers

Rachel H

  • Hi Rachel, I had a small infection on my abdominal wound and on the fold underneath my reconstructed breast that took a good 6-8 weeks to heal and close over properly. I had a couple of rounds of antibiotics, used silver wound dressings and kept the wounds clean with a saline solution each day and tried not to do too much that would pull on the areas while they healed. The scars for both areas are now really good - used bio-oil - but the areas that were infected are slightly more noticeable some 12 months down the track.

Anyway, here's hoping you're on top of the infection and all heals well for you now on in - no more moving furniture for a little bit! Jane xx

  • Hi Rachel,

Take it easy and rest up.  Hope the infection clears quickly.

    Sending big hugs you way,

    Karen xx
