Triple Negative

Hi all,

I haven't posted for ages as I have just got on with treatment have 4 rounds of TC, starting 20 radiotherapy sessions on 20 December.

I had appointment with my Oncologist today, I left feeling a bit freaked out a she explained that this type of cancer has a possibility of coming back within the next 18 months.

Feeling a bit lost and alone again, i know this is the best place to get support for this.

In advance thanks for listening.

  • Hi Kerrieanne,

This is Annie from BCNA. I'm really pleased to see that other women have jumped in to chat with you, and that you're feeling a bit more positive.

I thought I would point out that unfortunately any type of breast cancer can come back, not just triple negative breast cancer (TNBC).

We have a webpage on triple negative breast cancer, which highlights a couple of points which I thought you may be interested in:

    • TNBC responds really well to chemotherapy
    • Although targeted treatments are not yet available for women with TNBC, it is very treatable.  Five years after diagnosis, women with TNBC are no more likely to experience a recurrence than women with other types of breast cancer. In the longer term (over 10 years), it is possible that a recurrence is less likely in women with triple negative breast cancer.
    All the best Kerrieanne,

    ~ Annie

  • Hi Kerrieanne Deanne has said it beautiful and I haven't much more to add to her reply. However I will say that your oncologist has to give you ALL the facts good and bad and this doesn't mean that you will get a recurrence at all. I was diagnosed with TNBC (first lump) and ER+, PR+ & HER2+ (lump two), both in my left breast. My Oncologist told me that this happening was quite rare and proceeded to tell me the same as yours did that the TNBC cancer could recur within three years. She told me ALL the side effects of chemo which reduced me to tears and all I could focus on was that yes, I was going to get ALL the side effects and 'it' would come back. Everything gets magnified and out of proportion when you hear the 'bad bits'. Like Deanne says, none of us know what the future holds so I try not to worry about what I can't control. I can control my lifestyle and how I live it. So I am training myself to focus on the positives and put the negatives away in a box and throw away the key. Life is too precious to waste on worrying about things that may never occur. Your thoughts will settle down and you will do the same as we have done Kerrieanne. You will 'carry on'. Hugs to you Janey xxx
  • Hi Sen,

Thank you for your reply. Have you had a recurrence or continued to remain cancer free. I am feeling more positive today, I have recovered from the shock of yesterday's news.

I now have a positive attitude again. Hope you are well.
