To shave or not to shave

Welcome Lyn, this is the right place to come for advice and support during and after your treatment. I shaved my underarms just because of pride, and nobody mentioned anything either way.

Yep I did using an electric shaver before the mastectomy and again before the full axillary clearance (armpit). I couldn't use deodorant or anything so I got some antibacterial wet ones and those were great.

I was thinking the same thing about nicks and cuts, and infection.

Hi Lyn, if you do decide to go ahead & shave, I would suggest using an electric razor, to reduce the chance of any nicks or cuts, which could increase the risk of post op Infection.

I didn't have to think about it, as I had chemo before surgery, so I had no hair at that point, lol.

Hi Lyn,

I had a mastectomy which involved the cutting of the nerve in the armpit and removal of about 3/4 of the lymph nodes.  So I had to shave anyway.  BUT.... I remember the nurses did say that it is always the best to shave under the armpits anyway, just in case they have to remove any of the lymph nodes.  Surely couldn't hurt??? 

Good luck with the surgery, remember to visit here often, and keep remembering to BREATHE ..... regularly helps.  lol

Welcome to our wonderful network. I wish you all the very best with your opp. It is a personel choice for you to shave of course, but I certainly did and if they were to take any lymph nodes they would probably do it anyway.
