Tips

Is there a Tip thread for surgery, chemo or rad?

i have been writing down a few things I have seen on discussions that I think will be helpful going forward.
ie mepitel film for radiotherapy.

just wondering if there has been something started already, or if it is something that would be great as a quick source to look up?

  • Good on you - it is not the role of any Receptionist to pass on news like that!  Thank goodness that is behind you.  As to managing the skin and the scar.  Initially I used sorbolene but it didn't suit my skin.  My Breast care nurse suggested QV cream and that is what I use constantly on the breast.  For a while there I used bio oil on the scar only.  it is important to look after the skin so that it heals and is kept moisturised.
As to questions on chemo and rads well the journey is so different for all as we all react differently.  Don't get too caught up in others reactions as yours could be totally different, maybe similar or better - let's hope it is better!
As to mini holiday make sure you look up at some stage the Otis Foundation as they offer mini holidays for free for breast cancer patients and they are across most Australian states - you may find this very helpful during active treatment or when you complete treatment.

  • Hi Christine, agree the site is so helpful. I have gathered a list of things that I have seen in threads that I hope will help, particularly with chemo and rad.
Recovering from surgery well, still a little tender. I will be trying scar fx on the scars once they heal. I got the shock of my life and fell apart the week before last. My surgeons receptionist called to say she wanted to see me sooner than the scheduled appointment, I asked why?; the margins were not clear and that you will need to be booked in for further surgery next week. Omfg!!!! I mentally prepared for the appointment, hubby and I went into the appointment expecting the further surgery talk. Surgeon advises clear margins etc etc I guess she saw from my jaw drop and was surprised. I let her know what her receptionists said all she could say is I have told her not to discuss outcomes. Now I'm over that initial shock on can focus on a mini holiday that we had planned last year, it's only 5 nights in qld, escaping the cold in tassie. Xx
  • Hi Gerry - there is lots of info on this site as Cosette has pointed you towards.  There is even a suggested packing list for hospital - enjoy exploring the site and if you can't find something just come on with another question as I am sure one of us will be able to steer or give you an answer.
How are you recouping after surgery?  On the better side I hope and building your strength for the next phase of treatment.

  • Hi @Gerryb. From the Discussions page, you'll see a list of popular tags on the right sidebar like so:

If you click on a tag, it will return discussions with that tag. Keep in mind, however, that it's optional for members to tag discussions so not all discussions are tagged. Also, we recently redesigned the online network and cleaned up this list of tags. We're working our way back through the older discussions and tagging them.

Another thing you can do is try the search function. You'll find that at the top of the discussion page.
