Well I had a dose of radiotheapy on my lower back last Tuesday, and what a difference it has made! I went in feeling like 100 years old, and came out feeling 44 again! What amazing stuff! The pain has gone and I feel wonderful! I'm told that 80% of people with bone mets who opt for radiotherapy have their pain successfully relieved, and 50% of those people are lucky enough to have permanent pain relief in the treated area! (Others can have temporary pain relief from months to years). Wow, wouldn't that be nice! For now I'm just enjoying my new found freedom...being able to bend and get up off the couch without pain, doing some very light gardening, a feeling a sense of the 'old' me back (without pain that is). Anyone else had successful pain relief with radiotherapy?...short term? long term? Celeste?

Hi Celeste, Yes I also had a fabulous response in my shoulder which was very advanced and thoracic spine. I have no pain in either area now and was on heavy pain meds when diagnosed. Xx

Hi Celeste, Thats good news and here's hoping things go your way for once and the pain be gone for good. Hope everything is progressing along nicely for you and i think it's about time you had a break from all this crap. I havent been on much lately but that doesnt mean i dont think of all the ladies who were there for me when i needed support. Wow that's great news Anne Maree! I've been amazed at how well I feel in the absence of pain. I only hope it is long lasting. I wasn't on heavy pain medication prior to getting the radiotherapy, so wasn't sure if radiotherapy was appropriate for me. I had constant, irritating mild-moderate pain that could only be relieved by laying down and taking Panadol Osteo strictly every four hours. It was very limiting in that I couldn't function as usual. I was given the option of heavier (narcotic) pain medication, but decided against that and went for the radiotherapy instead. I'm glad I did! Celeste?

I felt exactly like you did! I put up with the pain, thinking I'd be better off leaving any radiotherapy until I was virtually crippled, as there are limits on the number of times you can have radiotherapy in one area. I spoke to the Radiation Oncologist about leaving the radiotherapy until "later" but he strongly encouraged I go ahead. I'm so, so glad he did as I have my life back! I have NO pain whatsoever now! I felt immediate relief as soon as I got off the treatment bed! I had put up with the pain, day and night, and they wanted to put me on very strong pain killers, but I'm so glad I opted for the radiotherapy cos its magic stuff! I've been putting up witht he pain in my Sternum (met) for a while now- too scared to have radiation- and worried that I need to keep it for later. Yesterday I met with a great team at Lismore Hospital- and Im going to have my first lot of zaps soon.

Now I feel so much better about it having read all this feedback.

Thanks for your best wishes. I have widespread bone mets apparently...skull, ribs, lumbar spine, hips. I only had a mild-moderate ache in my back however. The pain was enough to give me a poor quality of life..it impacted on everything I did, including sleeping. I am so pleased to have gone ahead with radiotherapy because I feel much more like the "old" me now. As soon as I got off the bed after having the radiotherapy I noticed a difference. Then I sat up and down, up and down in the waiting room because I was amazed at how pain-free I was! I just hope it'll last, Celeste?

Hi celesta So glad you've had a good result. I had radiotherapy 18 months ago (on my right hip) and have had no pain since. What a difference it makes! Amy x

Hi Celeste,

So great to get good results like you have. I am 22 months post treatment and only get pain associated with being unwell eg virus etc. It then settles again. I am very happy with results despite radiation not being good for the body. I would have a useless arm and poor quality of life.
