"Think it Ovaries"

Well my BC journey continues. Found out recently that i have a lytic lesion on my spine (T12). Have started a monthly injection of Zometa & have swapped from aromasin to tamoxifen.

My oncologist suggested that I have my ovaries removed, as this being diagnoses no.5, & all the last four rounds have been hormone +.

Just wondering if others out there have been given the same advice & the verdict on operation & outcome. My GP is on leave at the moment & would just love some feedback to help decide.

Cheers

Kezz

  • I'm pretty good just extremely tired from moving house - boxes, boxes and more boxes.  I am off to have my first mammogram and ultrasound since my second diagnosis 18 months ago within the next couple of weeks.  Fingers crossed!! XLeonie

  • Thanks Leonie

Yeah it has been awhile since i have been online. A bit annoyed that I am up for round 5, but maybe this sugery might solve that problem.

    Hope you are well.

    Hi Kezz,

I know there have been a few members in the online network who have previously posted about having their overies removed. I have completed a 'Tag' search and come back with the following results: http://www.bcna.org.au/node/all/blog/network/tag/ovaries

You might find their discussion of helf in your decision or you may want to connect with them and find out how they went.

    Cheers, Daina

  • Lovely to see you back online.  Sorry to hear about the new diagnosis.  My bc is hormone positive as well (both diagnosis)  After my first diagnosis back in 2006, I was on Tamoxifen (hadn't gone through menopause).  I kept having "breakthrough" bleeds and was constantly under the Gynecologist having d&c's as he was worried about uterine cancer.  He was inclined to give me a hysterectomy but as my mother had her periods until 56 I figured I was just following her "form".  Anyway with the second diagnosis of secondary bc in my lymph node my specialist put me immediately on Arimidex.  Of course after chemo I have not had a sign of any bleeding so I figured that was now not a concern.  However when I went for genetic testing, the specialist said that if the test came back positive then I would need to consider having my ovaries out.  The test came back negative - and again I sit back and say "one more surgery that I don't have to worry about for now".   I figure if I have another diagnosis and if it is hormone positive I will look at getting rid of all the "hormone producing" bits.  It is a bit to consider though as of course we need oestrogen to keep us a bit healthy.  We do make it from other areas though other than the ovaries.  I'm sure there will be other comments for you to compare with.  Best wishes. XLeonie
