The Transport Bus for cancer patients

I need to tell you the story about my visits to the hospital for my 6 weeks of Radiation.

Each day around the same time the bus would arrive with the people from Burnie into Launceston General Hospital.

I had sat quietly with half of the room of people waiting each day, but was drawn to the happy chatter that always came from the other side of the waiting room.

I noticed a lovely elderly gentleman who always had a smile for me and eventually he said hello.

Within a short period of time I found myself having a laugh with the group and getting to know general information about Peter the farmer, and my favourite Harry the smiley one.

They could hear us all laughing in the Radiation Rooms, and would know when we were all there.  I then went into St Luke's to have my Portal flushed through toward the end of the 6 weeks and started talking to the lady having Chemotherapy beside me.  You would not believe that this lovely lady Debbie, ended up being Harry's daughter and brought about a wonderful conversation.  (what a small world).

So armed with information I played a trick on Harry at Radiation the next week and made out I was Psychic and told Harry what his birthday is, how many grandchildren he has, his wifes name and had the entire room laughing.  They were aware of my stunt as I told them when he was in for his radiation.  I got him big time,  for a few minute until he looked freaked out,  the sweety, of 86 yo age.

The message here I guess is its not what we go through in life, but how we go through it.

Meeting the fun group from Burnie, made all the difference to me.  I will never forget them.

Thank you - love Bel

  • and your marbles, Bel!

I bet you made Harry's day and he could tell everyone about this gorgeous young woman who tricked him.

Have a look at our Launceston BC Network page- we have Mandy Gillies coming next month (evening meeting) and doing some of the Encore program, and then the next month we have Chrissie flying over from Melbourne with the beautiful bras etc that Dickory Dock source from Europe. (Morning meeting.)

    Keep smiling xx

  • Hi Bel,

Loved your story!  I also met some wonderful people during my treatment at the Perth Radiation Oncology centre in Subiaco.  Both patients and staff.  It made it far more bearable fronting up each day for the 6 weeks.  Gotta keep a smile on the dial!

  • Hey Susie,  Its a small place you know!   Margie and Leanne would have been the lovely ladies I had a few chats with, and tell them, I bought a map of Tasmania to take with me where ever I go from now on.  We went for a drive to Green Beach area the other day.  Our Navman needs updating and the voice drives us crazy, and I only use my phone pay as you go, so dont have the Aps to use.  So I am discovering Tasmania ol school with a map.  I hope they join up on here, and I hope one day we can all meet again!  Tell them, I gave Harry my phone number, and asked him to ring me the next time he visits his daughter Debbie, with scones and sausage rolls! XX Bel

  • Hi Bel, today I went to my small swimming group called "Splash and Chat", and guess what?  Chatting as we were I mentioned that I had been talking to Bel on the BCNA site.."Oh I wonder" says Leanne, "it could be", replied Margie.....yep these two ladies were a part of the BURNIE BUS Troupe. They were quite excited and told me lots of lovely stories. They send you their best wishes and hope to catch up sometime in the near future.  We may have to have a mini BUS trip up sometime. I am trying to get them to get on the site also. Sue.

  • Oooooh my Bella that is a beautiful story sweetheart.  Thank you for sharing that with me.  If I had of had an experience like that through my radiotherapy it would of made all the difference to my wellbeing and healing so that is fantastic.  I am so glad for you and I am sure you wowed everyone with your beautiful smile.Lots of love always, Mich xoxoxoxo
  • I identify with this experience. I have only been to the Radiation facility at Nambour (Qld) once for my preliminary visit, I won't start radiotherapy until October. But there was a group of mostly elderly people arrived on a bus while I was there too. They were from regional areas of Qld and were treating the experience of staying on the Sunshine Coast for their radiation treatment as an opportunity for a holiday. They were full of good cheer and really brightened the atmosphere, joking around with each other and staff. It certainly has me feeling positive about this stage of treatment and helped myself and my daughter who had come with me for this visit feel very comfortable with the facility. :)Deanne
