The next step in my journey

Today is the next step of my saying "goodbye" to Boris, my breast cancer. It is 0500 and in 3 hours time I shall present to the hospital for his surgical removal.

I saw  the Specialist last Wednesday. He was so factual and straight forward which is what I wanted. To know what his plans were and what my percentages are. He seemed a little surprised when Intimated he could have taken me to surgery there and then, but I had to wait a week. It wasn't a bad week. I went back to work after the Christmas break and caught up with a lot of friends and work colleagues.

The week was spent talking to them and working out what I wanted. No misery or "why me?" I have it and that is all there is to it. The sooner it goes the better.I can't change these facts, only adapt to them. I am still on an adrenaline high and running around on nervous energy. I expect that will stop soon and I'll come down with a bit of a thud. I'll bounce back again, I always do.

This year is to be a year of learning to let things go. Not hold on to grudges or concerns. So far it has been good and happy.

I am sitting with my lap top on my lap (keeping my knees warm) Looking out over the river. There are no ferries yet and the surface of the river is still and calm. I wish I felt like that. In some ways I am like that river, swirling waters hidden under the surface.

The sun is just starting to dawn. I can hear the gentle hum of traffic in the background.

What will today bring? The end of Boris? I do not want any lingering tendrils of him creeping around my body waiting to pounce at a later date. I really want my excision to show clear margins and no infiltration.

This is the wish of us all. Some are lucky, some not so. Please let me be in the former group. If I am not, so be it. Give me the strength to cope with that.

Thank you for listening to me/ reading my blog and thinking of me.

I am surrounded by love and support and feel cocooned by it all. I can just feel it.

  • Hi,

There's not to much I can say that hasn't already been said just know that there's a lot of people out there who have been down the path you now find yourself on and are only too happy to give you any help, advice etc you may need. I know that I devoured all the info I could find here when I was 'starting out' and it provided so much 'relief' to me. I think your positive attitude will really help but there will be days when you feel 'down' [believe me, been there] so make use of this fantastic site  :)

Just take care of yourself, your body will tell you when it needs to rest, and know that there are lots of people out there sending you healing thoughts, me being one of them!

    ps: Bye bye Boris!!

  • Thank you Dawn It is generally my outlook on life anyway.

I am getting a lot of support by writing this down and receiving messages from people like yourself who have gone down similar (or worse ) paths before me.

I just hope I can pass on the love to others as it  has to me

    Thank you again

    Love

  • Hi Poppy

I am doing really well thank you.

I stayed in hospital overnight as I live alone and also I could get access to some good painkillers if necessary.

I take pain killers when I know what is causing pain. After surgey I will take anything and everything.

I take panadol osteo twice a day so I am upping it for the next week. I took some stronger painkillers in hospital, because I could and have some at home in case I do here, but probably not.

I found wearing my sports bra has given the support to my poor booby that it needed. I sleep in it too.

I have arranged to see my GP tomorrow. She should have access to them by then. The idea being I can discuss with her options of where to go and if I need a second opinion (probably not because I don't disagree with the Surgeon's plans) Also that gives me the weekend to processif the news isn't what I hoped for.

My feeling is that Boris has gone and as long as he has taken all his testicles with him (I was going to write tentacles but then I thought that the former is more appropriate 'cos they try and  spread their seeds around as much as possible!!!)

And this site IS awesome. So much love and support just jumps out of the pages

    Keep well yourself

    Love

  • Dear Donna. Thank you for your supportive comments. It is really helping me having these messages of love and support. I feel blessed.

Some of my family know. I still have to tell my Brother, He lives in the US and his kids are pre teens so I didn't want to worry him over Christmas. My Aunt (also in the US) and I are very alike in so many ways. She knows as she was diagnosed 28 yrs ago with DCIS. She'll be 80 in April.

My sister has chosen to dis-associate herself from the rest of us after our Mothers death. But O will need to write and tell her so she can update her medical records and get herself checked out if she hasn't already) as she now has a maternal aunt and a sister with BC.

I am single and quite self sufficient. This is going to be a huge learning curve for me to let others help and to say 'yes'.when help is offered.

I made a start on that today when some of my work friends rang and offered to drive me to my GP appointment tomorrow. (Going to get an update on my results instead of waiting another week to see the Surgeon) So I will be treated like a Princess. Pretty in pink too. Ha ha. I have already tried a bit of DIY with  Manic Panic. Not quite the result I wanted but another colleague will come and do it in a couple of weeks for me. I like funky colurs and normally have 2 shades of blonde and red as a third colour (as well as the white that is starting to show through.)

Please excuse my ramblings but I find this very cathartic and it helps me process my emotions

    Thanks again

    Love

  • Thank you Michelle.

I really appreciate all the responses I am getting.

I have felt nothing but a coccoon of love and strength surrounding me throughout my journey.

I hope in turn, I can pass this on to others.

I have always been of the belief that whatever happens, you can't change any of it, just deal with it. So far I am very fortunate that I have had minimal surgery and am at an early stage. As long as the margins are clear..... If not I'll take the next step and deal with that and keep on smiling

    so Thanks again

    Love

  • You've already got one of the best weapons against Boris - a fantastic mental attitude.

Writing knowing you have already jumped one of the major hurdles in tackling him head on.

Here's to a speedy recovery for you.

  • Thinking of you today. This time tomorrow surgery will be over and you will be on the mend already. I truly hope you will have clear margins and no lymph involvement. Either way, you will deal with it, and kick Boris to the kerb. Will be thinking of you and sending mental hugs and strength.

It is what it is, and you are dealing with it. You can't do better than that, Mary. All the very best, Michelle
