The after effects of chemo no. 2

Its been a bit easier this time but lasting a lot longer. First time i was recovering after 5 days but its been 10 days now and i still dont have much energy to do anything. The side effects werent so intense but the fatigue was worse. I got the biotene toothpaste and that definitely helps the mouth ulcers. This time got a lot of reflux and horrible taste in my mouth. I have spent 9 days trialing every food i can to see what helps my stomach and taste buds at the same time. I thought i was being clever and stocked up on 1st chemo food but I couldnt tolerate a lot of that this time round. What sucks is that i have only 11 days left till next round  so hope i start to pick up again soon. Best wishes everyone Sue x

  • I always felt better after day 10 or 11 too, which is strange when you consider this is actually when our immune system is at its lowest! I found over the counter indigestion tablets did nothing for me during chemo. When I told my onc about the issues I was having she prescribed something (can't remember the name of it) which worked really well. I found letting the doctor know what side effects you were having, they usually had a medication to help. Hope you bounce back today! Take care. Deanne xxx

  • Thanks for your suggestion. Think i might stock up on indigestion tablets for next time. I am starting to feel better and also found that eating small meals frequently helps a lot. Hope everything is going well for you, best wishes Sue x

  • I have been keeping a diary too so that i know how i felt last chemo session. It helps heaps because i know that this time wasnt as bad as the first.I just really wanted it to be over after 5 days. I have been craving pies and sausage rolls too how weird is that. As soon as I was well enough to drive i went straight to the bakery. Best wishes Sue x

  • Hi sue. I ended up taking a heart burn / indigestion tablet and then finally a prescription one. This helped me immensely and I found that it helped me "want food" again. I felt it was a little bit like being pregnant. More frequent meals of small portions. It helped me keep the food down and once I had the reflux sorted my appetite was better. I also bounced back after day 10. Hope you bounce back soon, take care Lisa xx
