That should be it.

I had my portacath out this morning which, as far as I'm concerned, signals the end of my treatment. It's been a hectic and stressful 11 months and I am so pleased to be free of the whole slicing, zapping and poisoning process.

I had the port out with just a local anaesthetic which took a bit of negotiation. I can't say it was a pleasant thing to do on a sunny morning (rather more gristly and noisy than I had expected) but it was great to be able to get out of theatre, have a cuppa and go home without the need for drips or any other fuss. And no sedation hangover, which is also worth being fully aware through the op.

So, barring anything I can't control, I'm done. I'm booked for a four day Otis break then I'll see my oncologist next Monday and sign him off too. I've decided to go 'commando' and cut them all loose. No more tests or appointments until something goes wrong. It may, it may not. We will see. I'll have to be mindful of my bone density because of the Letrazol, but I've got bones like a Clydesdale horse so I'm not getting myself wound up about that at the moment--vitamin D, calcium and exercise will have to be enough for now.

Thanks for all the support. I feel so far away from where I was during the chemo--even though its only been a couple of months that part of my life is fading into history. Which is how it should be. Marg.

  • @Zoffiel great news...enjoy the break you have earnt it...thank you for your help and advice xxx Nellie
  • @Zoffiel I think that is perfect! You've been to hell and back not once but twice...it very much resonated with me thank you!

I was ready to cut ties also after treatment, that was 20 months ago, but no go, my Surgeon and Onc have a tight grip just for a little bit longer due to a few things. Like you however my mindset is now that I had the mastectomy and recon and further revision this year. I'm SO DONE!!! My good breast has had a lift to match my other and don't fancy even a Mammo thanks!!!!

I also agree I would love to sever ties and make an appointment ONLY IF something isn't quite right. All the very best Marg, on the road as far away from this you can travel, xx Melinda
  • What brilliant news @Zoffiel you are a truly remarkable woman
  • No coming back in three months @iserbrown. My onc, Harvier, has given me the best of care and agrees that our relationship is over. Im seeing him through the public system so, unlike many of his private colleges, he has no vested interest in having me return. Wouldn't mind running into him somewhere and having a chat, he's a lovely man who's having a red hot go at setting himself and his family up in a regional centre that is a long way from his original home. I also suspect that he can dance, there is a reason I like to follow him up the hallway :)

  • Congratulations Marg! @Zoffiel it has been a long haul for you and you definitely farewelled cancer the same way you fought it, head on!. Kudos to you getting your potacath out just with a local!!!! Me I'll be opting for a general and a drip hooked up to a nice bottle of Sav blanc ;) Enjoy your escape with Otis and the few glasses of red that undoubtedly come with it you deserve some real time for you.

  • Woo hoo!  here's hoping that you are signing off from all specialists and not on the come back in 3 months list!  Your words fading into history!  Enjoy your break away at Otis and here's to a new beginning with no roller coaster rides in it!
  • Great news @Zoffiel ! Enjoy your break - onward and upward now!
  • All the best and hopefully you never have to go through it a third time. Now you can start living again.
  • Hooray! Very best wishes - get on with stuff and leave all that behind!
