Taste

Hey ladies, how long after chemo finished did it take for food to taste good again.
Just finished my last chemo Tuesday and know it will be awhile yet. I can honestly say the taste has been one of the most miserable side effects of treatment. I've barely eaten at all in six months, for one chemo killed my appetite altogether, and two, no matter what food I try to eat, just so gross and unappealing. So just wondering when taste came back for you.
Thanks.

  • @Unicornkisses, glad to hear the swelling is easing. It's so Crap all of it. Thank god we are finished chemo. I'm looking forward to a decent tasting meal.
  • I am in week 4 after last Taxol and taste buds are almost back to normal!
It was one of the most dismal parts of the side effects for me, the metallic taste made me constantly nauseous too.
Hang in there, hopefully you will get yours back just as quickly.
My watery eyes are also starting to slow down a bit, thank goodness.
Lasix appears to be reducing the leg swelling that also came a couple of weeks after the last dose.
The legs are still very heavy and tire quickly, but I feel better in myself and have a bit more energy.
The last dose also knocked me for 6. Others have said that the side effects of Taxol built up over each dose and they were right.
  • @LMK74 - I know I am just new to this, but my taste buds at the moment are terrible lol. But it's just a week post treatment. Everything is so bland at the moment, ew!
  • Can't wait. This last round of chemo has kicked my arse. I feel like a corpse lol. It's like this last lot is saying F you, were getting the last word. Feel like I've aged 20yrs in six  months.
  • @LMK74 I totally agree, taste was awful for 4.5 months for me, it did take awhile to slowly come back, I'm with @Zoffiel, I think it was around 3-4 week mark that things started tasting normal LOL. Most importantly, it will come back :) x
  • Thanks @Afraser and @Zoffiel. I'm not expecting miracles overnight but it sure will be good when food tastes good again . Sometimes I'm sure the dog poo would taste better lol but I'm not about to put that one to the test.
  • About three weeks for me. I used to get some functioning taste buds about 2 days before the next poisoning.

I still, 4 months later, can't eat some things. Sour is OK--lemony or vinegary foods-- but bitter things like olives and coffee are disgusting. The smell of stewed meat makes me gag and I'm wary of onion and garlic but I'm able to cobble together a healthy diet. I just wish I could lose my obsession with sweet things.

It took a couple of years for me to get back to normal last time.
  • I lost my taste buds on Taxol and they returned relatively quickly, within a few weeks but bit by bit, not all at once. It was lovely to taste things again, the taste of cardboard got really boring, spicy foods didn't work at all and avocado and banana had become very tedious!! Good luck, hope they return really soon.
