Tamoxifen side effects feedback?

Newly diagnosed on 14/7/18. I am one of nine siblings and the first to get cancer. Not a label that I want... am keen to learn more about women's experiences takin Tamoxifen? I have my treatment plan after meeting Breast Specialist for first time yesterday & Breast Care nurse. Plan is  Surgery ( lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy) scheduled for 10/8. Radiation and 5 years Tamoxifen. The Tamoxifen is the least comfortable bit of this however keen to hear others stories...

  • From a male point of view. Just got clearance after five years. This drug should be administered to rapist and peodphiles. Would solve the problem. Thankfully I have a very supportive wife. My oncologist left the field and told me I could stop the drug. His other patients were handed over to another oncol.
He contacted me and asked me to come back for sn appointment. Went in and he said he wanted to to go bsck onto tamoxfin for anther five years. My choice. Decided no way. Now just waiting for it to get out of my system.
Good Luck with your treatment, thinks do get better.

  • Four weeks of daily radiation completed yesterday ✅ The fallout of being well endowed (20DD) and a post menopausal 55 year old is some skin issues. I'm caring for radiation burn and dermatitis on both armpit, chest wall and under breast.
Quite uncomfortable, itchy, painful where skin is broken and in places where skin is in process of breaking down. I've been told the radiation will 'peak' over the next two weeks then begin to heal.

Also about every third day have fatigue that blesses me with a 10-12 hour sleep!
Having a few weeks to deal with skin before starting aromitose inhibitor (AI)  Letrizole (2.5mg).
Originally medical oncologist wanted me to take Tamoxifen however has changed to Letrizole. There's very little online or on BCNA re this particular AI- apparently has different and often less side effects to Tamoxifen? Keen to hear others experience.
I've got to 55 and never in my life taken any medication...thinking about having to take this for 5+ years is galling. Im working on reframing it as a 'good' thing but I'm not there yet!
I've managed to continue to exercise (daily walks of 3-5 kms, 15-30 mins of cardio activity)...and am supporting my healing with good nutrition. Caring for self at the moment is a full time job!
  • It's so true what everyone is saying, we all react differently.  Hopefully you're one of those who settles in straight away and it becomes routine.  Remember it is keeping the hormones in check!

    Take care
  • Some cope ok on Tamoxifen and some don't. I am one of the ones that don't but I am determined to stay on it. Hopefully all my side effects means its really working well for me. You evolve and adapt accordingly. <3
  • Hi @Drover, welcome to his group. Everyone's reactions are different - but I've been on Tamoxifen for 18 months with minimal side effects. Mainly hot flushes. Aches are addressed by exercise. It's not been too bad at all. But I do have an annual pelvic ultrasound to check on the endometrial lining of my uterus (as uterine cancer is a potential, albeit rare issue with Tamoxifen).
