Tamoxifen & Uterine changes

I've been taking Tamoxifen for just over 2 years with relatively few problems. It's interrupted my previously regular periods with only probably 6 or so over those two years but a recent scan to check on my fibroids has picked up that my uterus is thicker. I've just seen the gynaecologist, who has booked me in for an investigative D&C. The literature I've read says your uterus thickness on Tamoxifen should range from 4-8mm but my scan says thickness is 18mm. He's told me this day surgery will be to check that I don't have endometrial cancer so I'm feeling really nervous. Has anyone else had this side effect from taking tamoxifen?

  •  I have been on Tamoxifen for over a year now but prior to that I had an ultrasound inside and out of the girly bits which said I had a lot of thickened fibroids already. Since I haven't had a period in over a year I must be in proper menopause. I guess I should drag my feet in and have a smear test. God I hate em.
  • I was on Tamoxifen for 18 months and experienced endometrial thickening. I couldn't believe it - the drug that was supposed to be protecting me from breast cancer might be giving me uterine cancer instead?! WTF???
My GP's advice that uterine cancer was slow growing and easily treated wasn't that reassuring. Anyway several lots of scans and tests later (and let me just say I really appreciated how nice and easy breast scans are compared to a transvaginal ultrasound!) and it was decided that I didn't have uterine cancer. Yay me! But as it was determined that I was now post menopausal (thanks chemo) I was switched to Arimidex.
It would have been nice not to have to deal with all that but in the end it was ok.  Just another little twist along the way.

I know how you feel. I was on Tamoxifen for just over a year with few side effects and then started bleeding quite heavily. This has continued since November last year.
I had 25mm thickening and had a couple of hysteroscopies before getting a Mirena. I chose to give up Tamoxifen due to this condition. It's a personal choice though. It's good to keep asking your doctor questions. I hope everything goes well.  I feel much better since stopping the Tamoxifen, although I'm not on top of this condition yet. Quality of life is my priority these days. :)
