Take it off....

Day 18 since first chemo and I can't stand it any more! It's only been five days but my scalp has gone from tingles to downright discomfort to sleep on and my hair was floating past my face at every movement. It was coming out by the handful and my friends were having hair land in their drinks at the beach bar over the weekend.... enough is enough! This morning we had a nice brekky at the beach then visited my regular hairdresser who clipped my head with a zero setting (didn't have a razor) and i followed that up with a visit to the wig supplier in Mareeba. I already have a "loaned wig" but my private health will also cover the cost of a new one so i figured i will get one and donate it to the wig library when I'm finished with it. Well - I have met my new best friend! My wig is called "Coco" and I just love it! I still hate my bald head but coco is making me feel a whole lot better about it. I am booked for chemo #2 this Friday but my friend is whisking me away to work with the sea turtles on Fitzroy Island the day before that - I'm very excited about that and hoping to spot whales on the way over :-)

  • Hi Chris - what good news to hear your curls have lasted so long! I remember "Tia". I tried her and "Sunny" on but Coco was the winner - hands down. I need to get used to wearing it so I carry a spare turban for when I get too uncomfortable. I have had a read of your blog - sounds like you have had a time of it with various bumps, tests and worries! So glad to hear of the clear call on that latest one. Also good to hear the party went well - the floors will always be there, looking like they need a polish so don't stress about them - rest up! Have a good day :-) LisaG

  • Hi Lisa, I also had a wig that was a better style and colour to any previous cut, and it has travelled to the hairdresser on several occassions to to match the colour. I still have quite curly hair, but as soon as it straightens out, the wig will go with me back to the hairdresser, to copy the style. No one ever guessed that I wore a wig, because it was so natural, and it made getting ready in the morning a breeze, as it never needed a restyle. Mine was called Tia, and I am wearing it in my profile picture. I have donated the good one, and kept the old one, just for this reason. I am about to have my 8th haircut, and I am still full of curls. Love Chris xx
  • Hi LisaG

After chem #7 I have 5 more, then 30 sessions of radiation. So still a way to go.

Thanks for your kind words to.

Yeah, shingles... who would have thought. But I must admit, the onc. has given me quite strong tablets to combat, and they have helped heaps. My sores have healed up quite quickly, but I just hope enough to be able to have chemo on Friday.....  Thats real sad, to hear me say I want chemo???

Keep us posted and hope all goes well with you.

    Love as always Julie XX

  • I went through mine with a number 3 clipper today, so much was falling and what is left  is SO fine. I have my wig already and I'm seeing a great hairdersser on Thursday who will make it ME. I have to work that evening so I plan to look fabulous !

I have several hats already and will mostly wear those - wig will be for work - in fact today at #2 chemo I wore a purple one given to me by a friend who bought it in Paris, yes Paris FRANCE - and just didn;t think it suited her at all.   The lady opposite came over to ask where I had bought such a great hat ! Way to make me feel better !!!  She was disappointed when I told her but had a good look at it with plans to make her own.

Don't be afraid of your skull, spend some time getting to know the shape of your head and practise with other wigs too so that you can mess with your hairstyles when it grows back !!

  • Absolutely! I LOVE it :-) I am going to visit my hairdresser so she can match the colour when my hair comes back through - I love it more than any other hairstyle I've had (and I've had lots). Keep me posted on how you go. I have found this website a godsend for advice ;-)
  • You look sensational! I remember the other profile picture (fab red hair) and your tingles post as I am only a few weeks away from chemo, so reading up on everyone's experiences. I am going to find this bit tough, but you have inspired me by your positive outlook. I have previously thought not to go the wig, but yours looks just great. Really natural.......is it that natural looking in person? Good luck to you in your treatment, Cheers Louie
  • Hi Julie - it was wise words from you on Keitha's page that helped me with decisions and management through this stage so thank you very much :-) Sorry to hear you are having problems - shingles is bad enough for those that ARE'NT on chemo! Good luck with #7. How many more after that?
  • Hi Lisa

Yes, we all have had the hair in everything episode. And the discomfort on the scalp is horrible. Good to have the hair shaved off... now you can sleep better.

I still haven't had the courage to wear my wig..... maybe one day.

Great to hear that you will be working with sea turtles . Hope you have a great day. My next chemo (number 7)  will be  on Friday as well.... keeping fingers crossed.... as had shingles, and wasnt allowed to have chemo last Friday.

Hope your chemo will go well.

    Love Julie XX
