Surgery tomorrow

So tomorrow I have a lumpectomy and axillary gland clearance. Am, quite frankly, terrified. This whole thing still feels surreal. I am not good at being sick and am afraid of not coping. Have lots of support but am trying to hold it together for others. Have a running away fantasy happening right now.

  • Came out ok ....sore and will have a drain for at least two weeks. Home and well looked after but struggling to stay ok ....bit down and messy. Thanks everyone for the good wishes

  • Hi Swirley

By the time you read this you should be out of surgery. I'm post surgery 3 days. I came out of it better than I had anticipated. One word of advice, don't use your arm that first day. Due to all the pain killers those first 6 hours my arm felt okay, so I had my food tray, water etc beside the side that was operated on. Big mistake, the painkillers wore off and I realise what Id been doing. Apart from that the recovery has been pretty good. Panadol and ice packs keeping on top of pain. Not a lot of move me t yet, but definitely small improvements each day. Praying you come out feeling comfortable and recovery goes well xx

  • Thank you all. Hook wire in and am sitting looking at the beach until admission at 1130".......thanks for support and good wishes

Hi Swirley, take time while you're in hospital to do some slow down and think time. Listen to your treatment team, and do all the exercises, etc that they give you. Have faith in your treatment team, and take it one day at a time. One of my daily rituals is to put my make up on whether I feel like it or not. Once the lippy goes on I win. It gives you a bit of normal in amongst everything else that is going on.  Hoping that your surgery goes well, Tracey B ??

  • Hi Swirley,

Just read your post.  All the best for today.  Can relate to the running away fantasy, everything is so surreal.

Our bodies and mind surprise ourselves by what it can do.  Take one thing on at a time. Surgery done? Tick that box.

Take time to recover and let people fuss over you.

    Thinking of you

  • Hi Swirley, please don't be terrified.  You may feel that you won't but you will and you will amaze yourself.  Run away after the surgery if you can.  A nice sunny location with a good book and a great friend sounds great.  Make the fantasy a reality.  thinking of you tomorrow.  Maureen

  • Hey there!!18 months ago.I was SCARED WITLESS!!!I know just how you are feeling tonight, but you WILL get through this, and it won't be as bad as you think.Stay connected on here and you will receive all the support that you need.It is definitely a surreal feeling, but before you know it,it will be over, and you will begin to realise just how strong you are.Stay in touch.Cheers Robynxox

  • Hang in there Swirley, it can be a roller coaster. You will have good days and bad days - but try to stay positive and just take 1 day, 1 step at a time.  Tackle bite size pieces - trying to take too big a chunk will drive you crazy.  You may just surprise yourself...

It it can be overwhelming, but there are lots of ladies on this site who have gone before you who will be here for a chat or to compare notes along the way.

Wishing you all the best for tomorrow

    regards

    chris xx
