Step 2 (and 3)

Surgery is done and dusted. I was lucky to have a very early morning admission and was in surgery by 9am. As you all know the less waiting you do the better your day is.

I recovered from my anaesthetic better than I anticipated and and the pain is not unbearable. I'm home safe with my little family now and I'm glad that I've ticked off a big box.

It was this morning though, after a whirlwind of surgeon visit, breast nurse consultation and physio that I realised something. It doesn't matter how "easy" my ride is, nothing will be the same. There will now be a before and an after. I will always be wary, always vigilant. I'm sure, as time passes, that I will become less obsessive but it will forever be a stain.

I unwittingly joined a club that no one wants to join. A club that doesn't want new members but offers lifetime membership to any unlucky enough to find themselves amongst the selected. It doesn't matter how hard you fight, or if you - like me - just pretend it's not happening, this is your reality. Welcome to Club Cancer. Here is a booklet, now you can never leave.

Anyway, the next step is waiting for pathology. Staging the tumour, testing the node, checking for hormone receptors. Until that's done its back to limbo. Trying to stay positive, but not making plans. I'm focused on recovery this week with a view to going back to work next week. I follow up with my doctor next Tuesday and then we will make an appropriate plan.

In the meantime, I'll just wait.

  • You articulate it so well. I think half the problem with cancer is the mental damage. The fear and grieving for my old certainty and future plans. At least I no longer worry about my small superannuation.

i look at people worrying about shoes and handbags, and just.... Want to get back to that place of worrying about trivial things. Or do I? I can't see myself getting back to worrying about trivial things, but it is probably a good sign if I ever do.

sorry about your club membership, but welcome anyway.

Hi KJ, none of us want to be part of this club, but you'll find the bcna girls the most supportive people that you'll ever meet. Keep checking in with us, sending you a big cuddle, Trace ??????

  • Hey kj

Staying positive is real important. Distract yourself with christmas i know the waiting is tough but you will get there.

Yeah its a crappy club we belong too. But i have made some wonderful friends during my journey i would never have met otherwise.

Its just another of lifes curve balls you pick yourself up and deal with it. Before you know it your treatment will be all over.

Stay strong and sending positive thoughts your way. ????

  • Hi, KJ

I was in the same position five weeks ago that you find yourself in now. It is such a whirlwind of events and emotions and I hope I never have to go thru it ever again.  I am sending good vibes to you and hope your results are good as were mine. This is a time when support from family and friends is so important. I can't believe how lucky I have been and I am sure you will be getting heaps of love and support too. Its hard not to think of worst case scenarios but as I was told by some very wise people....just take one day at a time. No good stressing about outcomes that may not even eventuate.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery and a great result. Chin up.

    Gay.

  • HI KJ - it is a journey full of twists and turns.

With all the love and support of family and friends it is (to use your turn of phrase) the Club members that get it.

The waiting puts you in limbo.  You'll know soon enough; time flies; there are other distractions at present to keep our minds occupied as we head towards Christmas New Year.

Hope your next part of the journey is straightforward.

    Take care

    Christine
