Starting Chemo

Well tomorrow is the start of 6 months of chemo.....was supposed to start 10 days ago but have been waiting for a breast infection to clear up. Hopefully the oncologist will clear it tomorrow because the waiting has been doing my head in. As I sit here and write this I am not sure of how I am feeling. At times I think I will be fine and then all of a sudden I feel like running away. I think since I found out 6 weeks ago that I have BC I have been living in a bit of denial and think "this isn't really happening". One thing that I have found that has been a great support has been reading the posts on this site.....I have read many over the last few weeks and admire the strength and determination that everyone shows....I can only hope that I can have that same strength over the coming months.

  • I ended adding in stemitil as well as Zofran (ondasetron) as I had that motion sickness feeling making reading, TV watching really difficult. It made a huge difference in cycle 3 and 4. And it really took me 10 days to sort of feel like me each cycle too. Take care. Kath x

  • Sorry it's taken me so long to reply but I want to thank everyone who commented on my post. The last 10 days since the treatment have been a real mixture of emotions and side effects to the chemo. It's only now that I feel like I'm back to some sense of normal. I guess the biggest hurdle was dealing with the changes happening to my body and dealing with nausea that just didn't seem to want to go away even with the drugs....but once my Oncologist prescribed Zofran that became my "Magic Pill". I now have a bit more understanding of what will happen during the next cycle so hopefully will be better prepared. At least it's another hurdle down on this road.

  • Also make sure you tell them all symptons and issues after 1st round as they really can add things in to vastly improve side effects...my 4th is so much better than 1st because I mentioned stuff. Kath x

  • All the best for your chemo. Its like the dentists, you really don't want to go but you front up for treatment any way. The staff are prepared for all sorts of different patients and what ever you feel or do is normal and they understand. Its a whole different world in chemo to hospital and apart from the injections and yucky feelings after, its not a bad place to go. They are very friendly people.

  • Thoughts are with you. The wait is the worst. Hope all smooth sailing from here. Kath x

Hi Marjorie, just take it 1 treatment at a time. The nurses are gentle and kind and explain along the way. Your oncologist will prescribe medication to help you manage the side effects, and you can ring the oncology unit for advice any time. And we're all here to support you and can help with advice if you need it. All the best, sending you a big cuddle, Trace ????????

  • Hi Marjorie I have my 2nd cycle of AC tomorrow & like you before I had the 1st one was terrified, I had told the oncologist that I hate being sick & he assured me they would give me plenty of pre med's to combat the problem & sent me home with anti nausea tablets. I have to admit it was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I am hoping the next round will be as manageable & wish you well with the treatment.

  • Hi Marjorie,

Firstly welcome to the Online Network, it's great that you have had a chance to read a few posts and it is normal to feel the way you are feeling. The members and our online team at BCNA will be here to support you along the way. So if it's just to say hello or share what you are going threw, we will be here. All the best for today.

  • Hi Marjorie,

I so understand how you feel. I was diagnosed late Feb and am also in the holding pattern waiting to be told Chemo is about to start (beem.told to expect the 1st one next week)...

I find it so unnerving that it has not started yet nut at the same.time.it terrifies me how mu body will react as I am.allergic to everything and that is why they have not started it yet....

I guess it is comforting to know we do have a good medical sustem and good doctors and nurses so it does reassure me if things go pearshaped they will look after us.

I reckon as far as the sideaffects go we just accept it will be a miserable few months but it is something we have to get through to make sure this bloody BC is dealt with and long term what is a few months.... mext to nothing in our lifetime and I bet in our heads we have built it up.into something way way worse than it is in reality so just hang in there.

I hope they do clear you so you can get on with your treatment and soon it will be all behind you

    Hugs

    Jel.
