Start of the big zap

Hi to every other passenger on this unplanned trip!

I have found keeping busy both mentally and physically kept me from getting too fixated on the big C.  With this in mind I decided to take up the offer to travel before I started my radiation (first zap today).

I guess now I have to just get on with it - no choice right? -  but would love to hear from anyone else who is just started to keep my spirits up.

  • Last Thursday 16th Dec was number 30 zap - took my 84yr old Mum (16yr bc survivor) out for High Tea at QVB to celebrate!

Looking forward to quiet time up in Coolangatta and have bought a couple of ravishing rashes so i don't get burnt on the pink side.. I was very lucky that my skin held out very well and didn't break down to blisters etc, just a bit pink.

Doctor advised to keep stretching to keep the muscle on the radiated side supple as some women suffer from 'frozen shoulder' if they don't.  I went to Body balance this morning and will get swimming on holiday, hopefully the salt water will help too.

    Best wishes to everyone

  • I love your determination - driving all those long K's and now getting thru this next hurdle, but still throwing a party!!  I really do feel being a bc survivor makes us stronger and more compassionate - no more navel gazing

    Take care

  • Glad to hear, things are going okay, and you got to go along to a look good feel better session, they are really good, i went along to one when i was bald, so i had to try on all the wacky wigs, but was a good laugh and everyone came away feeling good, so even though i had to drive 145k's to get to it it wa worth it, and would reccomend them to all. Keep looking after yourself...   Moira

  • Tomorrow i have my 15th zap - only 15 more to go!

So far just a little itchy and tired around 4pm - but have managed to keep going the last couple of days, actually find i feel very groggy when i do snooze too long on the days when i can.

This morning after my session I was treated to a makeover at a session for women with cancer at RPA called Look Good .. Feel Better - a great idea where women who are having treatments such as Chemo and Radiation are invited to a demonstration by professionals with some makeup tips to make them look and feel better, plus we came away with lots of free cosmetics!

  • Thanks to everyone who has contributed to my Zap blog.  I will definately follow up on the advice about the rest - I have a little sunny spot where I can go for a quick lie down, usually accompanied by my black cat Beatle (his favourite sleeping nook too).

Stocked up on the creams and agree the staff who take care of us are soo lovely - we joke about the tattoos and the irony that the last time I had so much fuss made about my breast was when I was trying to get the breast feeding happening! (14yrs ago).

  • just checking in after being away for a couple of days, and read you blog, hopefully radiotherapy is going okay, just keep slapping the cream on as they say, i had 6 weeks radiotherapy after my chemo, and didnt have too much trouble, just a bit tired but i learned to lie down when i felt it comming on, and a 20min lie down done the trick, so keep in touch with all our friends on here, its a great support network.  Regards Moira

  • Hi Elaine,

I finished 21 doses of radiotherapy a couple of weeks ago so was pretty lucky not to have to have too many. I tried to keep busy - apparently this helps keep up energy levels. Also I religously kept the cream on twice a day (sorbolene initially and then sorbolene with lignocaine when it started to itch). Good luck - and see the nurses if you're unsure about anything - they are wonderful! Cheers, Rose

  • Hi Elaine

I am very new to this site too and finding my way around. I was diagnosed in August and finish radiotherapy next week. Luckily I haven't had any great reactions just abit tired the last week. Very little burning.I have also found out that I have to have Chemo and herceptin as my HER2 was positive and start this dec7th.

Hope all goes well with you
