Side effects
Hi all. It's been a while since I last posted. Had my first (1/4) and as it turned out my only chemo treatment on 28th Jan (docetaxel/ cyclophosphamide) which went well and 24 hours later gave myself the pegfilgrastim injection. Noticed the joint pain on the Thursday.
Friday, joint pain extremely bad in the knees, slept, and temp was just over 38 when I got up. Called ambulance. Went to PA where I ended up on ward 2E. 2 infections, one in left breast from surgery. Drained.
After 2 weeks sent home. Great. NO MORE CHEMO. I fell into 1% of people who cannot cope with chemo.
Was home for 6 days before I lost my appetite, fever, nauseous. Rang hospital for guidance as temp 37.9. Called ambulance. By the time I reached hospital temp 39. After getting through Emergency I ended up on Ward 4. All I wanted to do was sleep and bring up mucus. (I also have divituculis.) Went downhill. BP went very low. Fevers. Kidneys damaged (probably due to heavy antibiotics and ct contrast). Ended up in ICU for 2 nights, then back on Ward 2E. Infection had returned. Temp spiked at night. Bloods/cultures taken. Arm was a constant pin cushion. Veins collapsed.
Finally came home after 2 weeks on meds (still reducing). Radiation therapy has now been brought forward and for longer now, awaiting date.
So in all a pretty rough time. Glad to be home. Having to learn to hold breath for 25 seconds for rads as I have to do the deep hold. Not looking forward to that contraption.
Kidneys coming back to near normal.
Just want to let others know that you too may end up in this group.
Oh when I was in ICU my eyes turned bloodshot. I called them the devil eyes. They knew I was getting better as my sense of humour was coming back and the oncologist never knew what I was going to say next.
I was well looked after. Never felt afraid of what was happening. Just asked questions about what I could do to help get better. I let them do all the tests possible to get results and to help plan next stage.
If you are unwell, and your temp is at or close to 38 please do not hesitate to go to hospital.
Cheers
