Side Effects from Chemo

Hi everyone, I am yet to start my chemo regime . Have been reading about everyone’s different side effects....I realise that not every person gets every side effect.....but! besides hair loss, nausea, fatigue, chemo brain, I read about nails dropping off or going yellow? Is that common?

  • Wow! Thankyou everyone. I shall add it to my list of possibilities!
Gosh, I never knew about the nail thing. I guess I should’ve realised seeing hair loss is so common,  oh well, I am fore warned now.

kmakm, I have my first appt with chemo team on Aug 8th.
  • I had TC. By the end of it my hands and fingers were incredibly sore. Most of my fingernails had brown markings and they all lifted. None came off. Each chemo dose created a ridge that slowly emerged long after my last infusion (mid-March). They're halfway up my fingers now and I'm happy to say the nail coming behind is normal and healthy looking. The damage from the brown markings and nail lifting is now the top edge of my nails and they're weak so have just started to break now.

Several toenails got dark brown at the base of the nail. The nails which were the darkest have just in the last two weeks, come off completely. That includes both my big toe nails. It didn't hurt but the skin underneath is very tender so for the first few days I put bandaids on them. They'll be slightly odd for sandals but I've got a few months to go yet!

Other TC chicks have not had their nails as badly affected as mine, so you're absolutely correct Fletch, we all react differently. Best of luck. When do you start? K xox
  • Taxol toenails! Mine all stayed on, but brown, grey, chalk white. Also split in some cases, opening up up like a bit of veneer left out in the rain. Not a good look in summer. Fingernails looked slightly as if I smoked but nothing worse. Toenails take some time to grow out. Don't know how common it is but it can happen. Mine didn't hurt at all, just looked awful.
  • I had AC-T which is not as rough on the nails but now that I've come to the end, my fingernails are breaking and flaking and a couple of my toenails have gone yellow and will eventually come off, I think.  Not going to be a good look in sandals, this summer.
  • Depends which chemo you are having @fletch The nail thing is pretty common with TC. My local hospital is pretty basic, but they did have ice mittens which, I think, kept my fingernails intact. I was also advised to paint them black to keep the light off. Not a fashion choice I'd have gone for usually, but it seemed to work. They were thin and brittle by the end but I didn't lose them.
My toenails were a different story,  they were disgusting. The upside was my persistent toenail fungus, which had resisted years of treatment gave up. Winner!
