Sensitive skin

Its now two weeks since my mastecomy. The drain came out yesterday. Really feeling as if I am recovering well given the curcumstances. However, I am looking for some advice. The skin under my arm and around my shoulder is extremely sensitive. It feels as if the nerve endings are on fire. While the skin around the scar feels numb and tingly. Is this all normal and is there something I can do to make this wierd feeling go away? Skin looks a healthy colour, just sore.

  • Thanks Tonya. I think I will head back to the Breact care nurse. I see that there is a bit of fluid build up. I see the radiology oncologist on Thursday and medical oncologist on Friday..

  • It does sound normal but there is always the possibilty of infection or a seroma.Have you checked your temp?A seroma is a swelling or collection of fluid you can get after surgery. After my auxillary node clearance,I had all those symtoms you describe. It settled down to numbness under the arm but I still get a little twinge where the drain site was.I am totally numb across my mastectomy scar. The sensations I get now are as if I have a rolled up newspaper under my arm and duck tape across my chest. But I've had bc twice in the same breast so have had radiation in 2003 and then a mastectomy in 2010.My skin wasn't very elastic and apparently I have adhesions so hopefully, you'll fare better than me.  Tonya xx

  • Hello Debbie, this is pretty normal I think.I am 8 months past my mastectomy and the skin on the scar line still feels half numb.It is sort of like when you have your mouth numb after the dentist, and it has started to wear off! The skin under my arm area is still a bit tingly, and parts of it are sensitive. My surgeon said it may never go back to how it was. I am happy with it now though.Zit is not as sensitive as it was after surgery.Hope this helps?Cheers xoxRobyn
