Scars

Hi all, I was advised by the breast care nurse to buy some Vitamin E oil for my scars. So off to the chemist I went bought some and came home ready to rub it in to the stomach scar but found it wouldn't spread easily and was really sticky. Has anyone else found this or is it just the brand that I bought? Happy for any suggestions as my scar is from hip to hip following DIEP surgery so also have the scars on the reconstructed breast as well. So have a lot of scars to cover.

  • Hi Sue,

I use a vitamin E cream on all my skin but use a silicone based gel called 'Dermatix' on my scars. It is a little pricey, but so far I have found it fabulous. I am 5 weeks post mastectomy and it is already fading and softening the scars! I have heard good things about Bio-oil as well.

I recently attended a Lymphoedema Clinic where they emphasised the importance of good skin care, not only for if you have radiotherapy, but the importance of keeping things like your heels in good condition to prevent cracking. Apparently any break-down in the skin, cuts, grazes etc can allow infection in, particularly when your immune system is compromised.

  • Hi Sue

I was recommended pure rose hip oil by my local health food store over vitamin E oil.

  • Perhaps you could try Essentials Vitamin E cream instead?  I was told to use this after my bilateral mastectomy 2 years ago, and I still use it today.  It spreads easily, sinks in completely, and my scar is now just a fine white line.  I also had 28 radiation treatments and used the cream throughout, as they also recommended.  It's $20 for a big tub, or $5 a tube handbag-size.  It really worked for me.  All the best whatever you try - Michelle x
