Saying Hi & Advise

Hi All,

It's been so long since I've been on here. I feel so bad for not checking in with everyone. How are you all? I hope everyone is doing well & staying strong.

I've just had my 3 year clearance & feeling relieved. I did have a moment of doubt & what if the night before but lucky it was ok.

I need some advise though. My oncologist has had me on E-fexor for the past 3.5 years to manage my hot flushes from menopause & just wondering what everyone else is on as it's starting to feel like it's not working anymore?

Also, does anyone else find it hard to find travel insurance that covers breast cancer & side effects? If you have any insurance companies that cover for it, please let me know as I'm travelling to Chicago in Dec & my usual travel insurance company doesn't cover it anymore.

Hope everyone is good

  • Stacey, Mine were so severe at onset having Chemo :( but have to say they really have gotten better and its 9 months. So I really believe time is your best bet, hang in there! Melinda xo
  • Thanks ladies for the great advise on hot flushes & insurance. I will try NRMA & Covermore & see what they say. I am taking magnesium tablets but I might try the powder or spray. The hot flushes are a pain but the alternative is worse. It's not so bad in winter but summer is horrible. Not looking forward to summer at all.
  • I got a quote from NRMA. They will cover you. It was more expensive than normal cover but worth it. You sure want to be covered for the USA. Good luck.
  • Covermore's Product Disclosure statement states under Conditions we automatically cover for free :  Breast/Prostate/Kidney/bowel Cancer: "If you were diagnosed over 6 months ago, have not had any chemotherapy or radiotherapy in the last 6 months, your cancer has not spread beyond the primary site at any time and your journey is less than 6 months."
I would ring them again.  I have used their cover for the past 4 years and it was automatically passed.  Michelle x
  • Hey girls, the Covermore Travel Insurance???? They told me that while yes they will give me travel insurance, that insurance will not cover anything to do with the breast cancer. It covers everything else apart from that.
  • Hey Stacey!
Yay!!! Happy 3yrs such wonderful news!
My Oncologist prescribed Effexor but I tried to take it twice and was so incredibly ill so stopped. Im 9 months post chemo and whilst hot flushes are bad, I find theyre not as bad as what they were initially and ive only just realised that as we have all been talking about it! I believe its just a time thing and Ive been taking magnesium powder in water everyday for quite a few months, I even have  magnesium spray LOL for cramps and its great! I concur, Im going away in 4 weeks to the Cook Islands where my partner comes from and Im flying Virgin and my insurance is Covermore. :) Hugs Melinda
  • @stacey29 welcome back online. Great to hear you had good news. Here are some other conversations that members have had about travel insurance. It may help you out.
  • Hello Stacey,

I'm so happy for you! Happy 3 Year Clear!

Wow, we've been talking about hot flushes around here a lot lately, they seem to be coming up every few days. I don't think it helps that the weather is also changing. :sleepy:  Here's the most recent big thread on it. Magnesium and sticking your foot out of the covers at night seem to be the most popular remedies

  • Can't help on the hot flushes, sorry, but I messed about trying to find a travel insurer who didn't have exclusions for cancer only to eventually find that Covermore, the standard insurer with Flight Centre had no problem as long as you were 6 months past chemo and no recent hospitalisation.
