Ribociclib for early breast cancer

Hi all, this drug has recently been approved for early breast cancer (previously only used in metastatic).  Has anyone here recently started taking it in this context?  What is your experience?  My oncologist wants me to start it when I commence hormonal therapy in a few weeks.  Thanks :-)
  • Hi Jaydee, thanks for this info? I'm interested to know what type of BC you have. I'm on hormone blockers, Invasive lobular Grade 2 Stage 1, ERPr pos Her neg.
  • Welcome to the forum, @jaydee70 - I hope we'll be able to smooth the road for you.

Feel free to tell us more of your BC story so far - where you are (roughly - you can add it to your Profile.)

What type of BC have you been diagnosed with?  Have you had your surgery yet?

I've not read up on the Ribociclib/Kisqali for early BC - yes, previously used on Mets patients - so it will be interesting to hear from anyone else who's on it

Jump onto this thread to see some other areas of the forum (off topic) that we have some fun with - show us your furkids, art & craft, your garden ..... and even funny stuff!  ;)

take care & all the best with your ongoing treatment xx

  • Hi @Jaydee
It’s relatively new for this drug to be used for early breast cancer so you may not get much response to this post.
However , the most common side effect of this drug seems to be low neutrophils so you will have regular blood tests.
There is a long list of potential side effects but you may not get any of them or only get them mildly.
You will be closely monitored by your medical team.
Do you have a breast care nurse ?
They are a great source of support for getting advice  and support re any side effects.
    Take care🌺
  • Hi everyone.  Thanks for the replies and the warm welcome.
I was diagnosed in April with Invasive lobular Grade 3 Stage 3, ERPR pos, HER neg.  I had a mastecomy and aux clearance in early May and did 16 rounds of chemo from June - Oct.  I have just started my radiation - 5 down, 20 to go!

Info on Ribocyclib for early BC here: Study: Kisqali and HT Reduce Early-Stage Breast Cancer Recurrence Risk

I do have a breast care nurse that I can contact, so I will give her a call to discuss.

Looking forward to have more of a look around the forums.
  • hi @jaydee70
My oncologist has confirmed that I will be on Ribociclib when I start my drug cocktail at the end of February.
This will be along with Letrozole, Zoladex & Zometa.
I have a couple of dental appointments coming up (during my rads - yay!) to avoid any issues with Zometa, but I'm keen to get a better idea of the Riboclib side effects when I see her.
I'll bookmark this thread and share anything I learn.
Best wishes to you - how are you going? Have you started and if so, how are you feeling?
I suppose when it's part of a combination of endocrine therapies it's hard to know which is causing which side effect - if any.

  • Hi @jaydee70, ribo is very new for early breast cancer but I would imagine the same side effects may apply. Everyone is different and every cycle of ribo can be different. I take ribo but for mets. I am up to round 4. Round 1 saw liver enzymes go up so dose reduced from 600mg to 400mg. I seem ok on 400mg. I feel relatively well. I do get fatigue but the other drug I am on also may cause fatigue. Round 3 saw me have itchy skin for 3 days and then it disappeared which was good. I record the side effects so I can ask questions or discuss with my oncologist. Hopefully you won't have any side effects. The pharmacist told me most people tolerate it well. Best wishes to you.
  •  @jaydee70, I’m hormone + , Her2-. Grade 3 and stage 3 ( same as you)

I have just completed chemo and will be starting radiotherapy likely end of Feb. My oncologist have mentioned he would like to put me on one of the CDK4/6 inhibitors (ribo) is one of them. I don’t have much details at the moment as he will tell me more when I’m close to finishing my radiotherapy. I noticed you are in South Gippsland, I am in Melbourne.

    Hope you are doing well.
  • @jaydee70 hello there. I have early breast cancer as well and the last time I spoke to my oncologist, she wanted to put me on a combination of Anastrazole and Ribociclib (and one other medication which is an injection and I am not sure of the name). I would be interested to hear about your experiences.

I live in Sydney. I have had treatment for stage 2 grade 2 hormone receptor B/C. I had 16 rounds of chemo (A/C and Taxol), two lots of surgery to clear the tumour margins in the left breast (7 cm), and axillary lymph node clearance (27 removed), and am about to start 20 rounds of radiotherapy this week. My journey has been a roller coaster.

I have a follow-up with my oncologist in the middle of March, so I can ask more questions. I will keep an eye on this thread because maybe we can all keep each other posted as we progress.
