RESULTS BACK

Got my results back on Tuesday and they are all good. I just have to take to tamoxifen. I am not going to start this until Monday....feel bad enough without adding hot flushes and anything otherside effect that might effect me. I think it is the weight gain that scares me the most. I have heard of plenty of people who have put on weight but don't hear about those that haven't. Is ther anyone out there who can give me some positive stories while on tamoxifen or some good tips to make it easier to deal with? Thanks Karon

  • Hello Thank you for the message. It has been 2 weeks now and I haven't had any noticeable side effects yet...so will keep my fingers crossed. Weight wise I am recording all my calories in "My Fitness Pal" so I can keep track of what i am eating. I have been using this app for a few years now on and off and it keeps me true to my eating habits:) Thanks Karon
  • Well I can say that after these comments I am not going to stress about the weight now. I have never had a weight issue but I do watch what I eat and make sure I exercises, so the thought of gaining weight did worry me. Thank you all, and I will update on how I go once I start taking them on Monday. Xxx
  • I have also been on Tamoxifen since new year's day, so far so good.  I am also conscious of what I eat and I also exercise on a regular basis.  So far I have not had hot flushes although chemo did push me into menopause.

And like Deanne and Robyn I take mine at night with dinner and also set a reminder on my phone for this as well.

    All the best. Fiona x

  • I have been on Tamoxifen for 21/2 months and have actually managed to loose weight. I exercise everyday and eat a very healthy diet. I find exercise helps to reduce the hot flushes and keep me feeling mostly positive too. I also set an alarm to remind myself to take it and take it at night with dinner and a full glass of water. Hope you find it not too bad also. Good luck! Deanne xx

  • Hi Karon, I have been on tamoxifen for just over a year and I have not gained any weight. I'm not fanatical about diet and exercise but I do watch what I eat and get to the gym regularly (about 3-4 times a week). I find if I let myself go a bit - as I did over Xmas  - my weight starts to creep up and I do have to work hard to lose those couple of kilos. But I think that has always been the case for me even before BC and tamoxifen. I agree that you need to keep an eye on it - weigh yourself regularly and cut back a bit/exercise more if the weight starts to go on.

I too have hot flushes but I was having them prior to starting tamoxifen due to chemo-induced premature menopause. They are pretty mild and infrequent and don't bother me much. Sometimes I wonder whether my early waking is due to tamxifen but can't be sure. Otherwise I've not had any major problems with it. I think if you keep exercising and eating sensibly you will be fine. good luck. Janet.

  • I think keeping an eye on it is the trick! I met a lady last week at my nutrition class, that has been on Tamoxifen for 8 months. She told me she has put on no weight, and she feels great! Maybe it's just luck, who knows.Time will tell I guess;)Cheers.
  • Hi Robyn Thanks for your reply. That is positive news:) I went to the gym average 3 x week for 1.5 hours but once diagnosed in November I haven't been back. I lost 3kg from being in hospital so I do have a few kilos to play with. I was hoping that as long as i watch what I eat and then in 10 weeks I can exercise at same intensity prior to all this I hoped I would be good. From what I have read it looks like people are putting on weight although they do what they use to do, that worried me. Will just keep my eye on it to make sure it doesn't start creepy on. Thanks Robyn
  • I started on Tamoxifen almost a month ago,and so far it's been great!I have been having hot flushes before this, but they are definitely no worse.Very bearable.I asked my oncologist if Tamoxifen itself, will put on weight, and her take on things, was more that if it made you feel tired, because of hot flushes, lack of sleep etc, well then you would be less inclined to exercise,or keep up with what you had been doing beforehand.I weigh exactly what I did the day I was diagnosed with BC.As always,it is proven, that exercise helps, with any side effects of hormonal therapy.I walk or ride every morning, and then at night after dinner, sometimes as late as 8.30 pm I run and walk.(you might call it shuffling!) I have always been very conscious of my health and my weight, and for me, having BC has motivated me even more to take BETTER care of myself.I am seeing an exercise physiologist tomorrow to learn about the very best exercise that we can be doing after treatment.I will put on my blog tomorrow night what I learn,if you want to take a look.Just one more thing with Tamoxifen,I take it immediately before I eat dinner, and I take it with a large glass of water.I set an alarm in my phone ,cause it is so easy to forget it.Hope, that this might help a bit.All the best.Robyn xoxo
