REMINDER: Strength to Strength - National Conference 2012

Hi all,

Just reminding those of you from rural areas who are are eligible to apply for financial support to attend the National Conference, that it's not too late to apply. But you will need to get onto it in the next couple of days.

Applications must be submitted by this Sunday, 13 May 2012.

If you're not sure whether you're eligible, or want to find out more about the criteria and application process, just take a look at the Conference financial support information page.

  • Hi Shaz, there will definitely be a report after the conference (probably more than one!) so that everyone who can't get there will hear about it.  We'll also encourage attendees to blog a bit, too, so you get the 'flavour' of it. :)

  • I would LOVE to come but there is NO WAY I could afford it.

I am on a Disability Pension and my Hubby is on a Carers Pension (due to my pre-existing conditions), the costs of my cancer treatments are already squeazing our budget severely (it is not just the direct costs but the other things it throws up, like the cost of hats, medications, travel to and from treatments, medical appointments, scans, higher electricity costs (having to have the heater on longer etc, as I am trapped in bed by fatigue after chemo), grocery costs (I have issues with a lot of foods and no interest in food, so meals cannot be planned ahead as they once were, or we waste too much food), the extra water costs associated (double flushing toilets, more frequent, showing and clothes washing etc), Dentist (cost me a fortune before chemo began, and that was with the discount/ subsidies I qualify for) etc etc etc ). I live in Canberra, so don't qualify for the assistance, but cannot afford, the cost of the $200 registration fee, let alone the cost of getting there and accomodation etc.

So alas I will not be attending, it sounds very interesting though, and hope it is a very successful event for those who can and do attend. I hope those who do attend make a post to let those who couldn't attend know what came up and what it was like etc.

  • Hi Everyone,

This will be my 4th Conference with BCNA and for those women thinking about going...its well worth it!

This particular National conference it said to "be the first time in Australia that health professionals, researchers and women with breast cancer will come together in one location to listen, learn and debate the key issues in breast cancer."

I think this is WELL overdue! And I'll be extremely interested in seeing the interaction between all involved.

Too often Health Professionals listen to us as breast cancer patients but my question is...

Do they ever HEAR us? Do they truly hear and understand what we are going through? What happens when we get home? What our families are going through? What we are still experiencing months or years down the track? I'm sure I'm not alone in my thinking, in fact, I know I'm not, and the reason I know I'm not? BCNA Conferences, the REAL women I've met and have shared experiences with.

Ths is why I encourage those women contemplating the thought, just do it, you wont regret it! (and like me, you may just meet your very best friend there!)

    See you there, Sam xx
