Red breast still - 6 weeks post surgery ??

Hi to all.

Here I am 4 days since having the iv drip in overnight, in hospital and I'm still struggling with this damn infection.

I'm honestly feeling quite defeated last couple of days. The redness settles a bit, dosent go away. It is better than when I in for my first chemo and they decided to admit me instead. My temp was around 38 that day.

I invested in a good ear thermometer this week. My temps been sitting between 37.2 and 37.6 each day.

Im heading in for first chemo again Tuesday morning. I need this infection to go away, just go away, so upsetting that it just sits there. Been on 6 different lies of antibiotics.

Has anyone been through similar problems. The last surgeon said he thought it was a cellulitis skin infection as the scan didn't show abscess, but did show a hardened seroma. So thought it was more based as a skin infection.

Im not feeling real confident bout starting chemo with this just sitting here, underlying all the time.

Im ready to say stuff it all, nor going chemo. My body can't do anymore. ??

  • Hey to all you wonderful ladies.

No chemo today. Infection bit worse last 2 days with temps between 37.5 - 38.1, so I made the call myself and they agreed, sent me back to surgeon today.

Put me back on original antibiotics, plus she wants me to wear a bra. As first month, was so much swelling, wouND etc, never wore one. Only been wearing occasional crop top with no support. Surgeon thinks that may go long way to helping the red inflammation area as its all accumulating at the base of breast. So got my new bra to start wearing tomorrow.

Meeting with surgeon next Tuesday to reassess infection, Ive also asked to meet with the head oncologist as my feeling about starting chemo is wavering.

My concern is this infection has been up and down, nut always the base redness the last 7 or so weeks.

So my questions to them will be, how can I comfortably start chemistry with any redness at all. I feel them trying to start otcagsin next Wed/ Thurs is way too soon. Unless the rednesss completely, completely, disappears.

So praying a lot and hoping next week I have more clarity about if and when to move forward with chemo ??

  • Hi Kazza, just wanted to let you know you've been in my thoughts. How are you going? It's been such a tough ride for you so far. Did chemo go ahead today?

    Take care

  • Hi, 2 months after my lumpectomy and I am getting redness on the underside of my breast.  GP gave me antibiotics but nurse was worried out lymphedema and sent me to a physio.  I have had one session with her where she massaged the hardness and then showed me properly how to do lymph drainage massage everyday - things are getting better and redness has nearly gone.  Tomorrow she is also fitting me with spaghetti foam to site in my bra and help with compression and drainage.  I have my second round of chemo next week so hoping it will be sorted by then as well.

    Good luck, Kari

  • Hi Kazza, thinking of you and hoping that the infection is finally going. It's understandable that you are feeling so frustrated and fed up. I had a couple of setbacks through chemo / Herceptin, but I did get there eventually, and you will too. You've had a rough ride, no doubt about it, but I'm hoping and praying it will be better for you soon. Jane xx

  • Kazz,

My heart goes out to you, it is so hard to see how you are going to get to the end when you feel so sick.  You just have to hang in there because you will start to feel better and then you will find the strength and bravery to keep going.

    Big hugs Xx

Hi Kazza, I had a red chest around my wound for ages. It was due to an infection in the drain tube site, as I had a persistent stromal, and I ended up in hospital for a week after my first chemo. I wasn't responding to 1 IV antibiotic, so they added the heavy artillery antibiotic and I went home on oral antibiotics for the next month. The infection went eventually, but the long term antibiotics caused oral thrush, so every time I had chemo after that I had to use the nilstat oral drops. When you get sick like this, it is disgruntling and frustrating. I lost a lot of confidence and carried my thermometer with me everywhere I went. Just keep persistent with caring for yourself, and get yourself to the hospital if you have a concern. The worst thing that can happen is that they send you home letting you know that you are okay. I hope that your infection resolves soon. Sending you a big cuddle, Trace ????

  • Hi I hope you are feeling better today. It is really hard when thngs go wrong. Hang in there, I remember like scotty how crap you feel and how it feels like it will never end. Sending you a hug  and a smilexxx

  • Oh Kazza,my heart goes out to you, I remember it all too well. Once they get your infection under control and you eventually start your chemo it will go quick and a step nearer to being done I don't know if you are  having radiotherapy after chemo but that's no problem. Believe it or not this does all end . I had several hiccups along the way but now nearly 18 months since treatment finished and although I will NEVER forget it all it's getting further in the rear view mirror. So you keep your chin up I have just consumed half a tub of rum and raisin ice cream, and I now feel ill that will give you a wee laugh hoping you will start chemo soon  xxxx
