Recommended Surgeons in Perth

Hi All,

I am now 2/3rds the way through Chemo and my breast surgeon told me this is the time I should start planning my elective bilateral mastectomies and reconstruction.

I had a large 3.5 cm tumour removed by lumpectomy with one of two sentinal nodes having a micrometastese, the tumour was a Grade 3 with extensive lymphovascular invasion which makes local recurrance more likely. So from very early on the plan has been for me to have elective bilateral mastecomies and recon after chemo which will mean I don't need to have radiotherapy and i should be able to have implants.

I saw my breast surgeon yesterday and she was very negative about my planned surgery, especially regarding my reconstruction options.

So I need to see more surgeons to make sure that the surgery I commit to is right for me.

What I really want is implants without the use of mucle or other tissue flaps taken from elsewhere in the body. I know this can be done but my negative breast surgeon tried to convince me that a lat dorsi with implants was my only option.

Does anyone out there know a plastic surgeon in Perth they would recommend who does implant recon without the use of donor tissue or muscle flaps?

I have a tentative booking for surgery on 14th Jan with Hastrich and Van Beem. I see Van Beem in 2 weeks but i know nothing about him, as originallly I wanted Connell but he is away.

Help, Who else should I see who does the surgery I want?

Lara

  • Hi Lara,

I've also had Tony Connell recommended to me. He was also away when I wanted to see him - so I saw his colleague Ian Timms (who works from the same office in Subi). He didn't perform my surgery - but did my follow up saline solution injections (as I had my masectomy in Melbourne and came back to Perth straight after to start chemo). He was really lovely - would recommend maybe having a chat to him?

    Best of luck,

  • Hi Lara I don't know all your circumstances regarding your BC or your body type and I don't live in Perth so can't recommend a surgeon, but I do know that implant reconstruction is widely done as I've had it. Last year I had bilateral mastectomies with immediate expander implants put in which were later switched out to silicone. I recommend that you ask your GP for another referral to see a plastic surgeon who specialises in reconstruction after mastectomy - you need as much information as you can get. Good luck, Xxx Jeanine
