Really feel upset; need to talk to someone

Hi Ladies, boy what has happened to me this week and I don't even start the chemo until tomorrow.  We had to do a 300+ k round trip to see a specialist yesterday.  After the consultation we stopped at a small town to go into a supermarket - I stayed in the car.  My husband returned to the car to find me sobbing my heart out.  I couldn't stop it, the flood gates opened.  Since then I have been crying on and off and bouts of anger.  I thought I had this thing in hand, but obviously have been in some sort of denial.  I had to have another scan this morning and all I did was bawl like a big sook.  The nursing staff were wonderful and I told the doctor 'I had been in denial' - he said 'denial isn't bad' - I said 'denial is great, I want to go back there 'cos it sure felt better than this.  I suppose because I found out I also have 12 months of Herceptin treatment with radio & chemo, it has all been a bit much - especially when things went awry in theatre last week.  Suddenly when I walk through the hospital doors, staff are waving to me and they all know me - I find it all a combination of good, but also terrifying.  I keep bursting into tears, and I told my husband if I bite his head off, not to take it  personally because I don't mean to lash out at him.  Already I am totally 'over this' but have to 'plod on'.  Right now I don't want any visitors or phone calls, I dont have anything that can be described as a 'brave face' - not this week any way, I am fed up with the goal posts being moved.  I was told I have 4 months of Chemo, 4-6 weeks of Radiotherapy and 12 months of Herceptin (three weeks apart).  They told me "I have a long haul ahead"".  I guess this was the catalyst for my onset of foot-thumping, grunting and sobbing.  It certainly put the brakes on any plans I had.  I don't want to sound like a winge, but I am a bit upset.  I know about the upsides of treatment etc.  But at the moment I just feel like a small child who wants to throw a major paddy.  To cap it off, I am back to square one with my arm as the port is in that same side as they had problems with the other side, so I am bandaged up again and sore as a sore thing.  Oh dear, some one hand the girl a big hanky!

  • Oh Joy, it's not a bad thing to have a good cry!  It's good for the soul every now and then to let it all out.  We go through such a huge range of emotions when we are diagnosed with cancer and sometimes I know I needed to have a good cry and a "why me" day LOL!!

I hope you breeze through chemo (some people do).

If you ever need a chat or to vent, we are here to listen.  We have all been through it or are going through it and we know how you are feeling.

Take care and have a hug from me :)

  • Joy (and Deb)..u are both going thru all the normal emotions..don't ever feel embarrassed or that u are a sook..it is soooo normal..it's actually called  a re-adjustment issue..u need time to 'digest' all of this info and come to terms with the enormity of it all. That includes crying as much as u need, hiding away for a while, relying on others..all sorts of coping mechanisms..u do whatever works for YOU...

If ur partner or a close friend can be with u as u go thru treatment (especially in the beginning) then rely on them to help u..they can take the phone calls, see to visitors (my hubby played the door bitch role very well!!!)..help with meals..anything..u need to focus on urself. Take the time to enjoy a hot bath or get a massage..whatever makes u feel better..

remember, this is only a temporary detour and any plans u had made can be postponed, and u CAN do them later...

I know too well how this stuff messes with ur head, counselling and meds can be of help-seek either or both-the help is there, u just need to ask. Speak with ur breast care nurse, they will be able to arrange a counsellor and let u know how to go about sorting forms for medicare to cover the costs. Our B Care nurse is also our oncology unit manager & administers my chemo - so we see her regularly..we rely on her so much. We have been 'regulars' at our hospital since feb 2010 and we know them all, they know us and we feel like part of the family, there is some comfort in this, even tho its the last place u really want to be..they make is so much more enjoyable to be there..embrace their support too-take it wherever u can.

Good luck in the coming days...come back and keep us posted.if we embrace the strength of this network of amazing women, we can achieve anything

    Much love

  • Thank you Tonya; I really do feel I have been in overload - everything you said is so true, and yes! have thought of the happy pills, anything to stop this weeping thingie! and mood swings! Chemo tomorrow - I hope I can hold my own and not blubber in front of the other patients.  I told the nurse today I was so sore from the surgery last week (I had complications) and she said, she wasn't surprised as 'I was pretty beaten up!" I sure feel like it.  Anyway I will try and talk to you wonderful ladies soon, see how I feel.  Hugs and love x x x Josie

  • Hi girls,

Well you have both been through so much that you can't handle any surprises. You have to psyche yourself up for the next treatment but when it changes then you get spooked.Joy,your eyes must be so swollen from all that crying. I remember my meltdown vividly. My face was a mess for days-had to wear sunglasses. You feel like what's ahead is overwhelming cos you already been through enough. But you still have to have some nice stuff to look forward to so make sure you have a weekly treat. Joy don't be afraid to put your hand up for some happy pills or a counsellor if you keep feeling low.Tamoxifen and a bald head sent me spiralling down and my doctor put me on a very small dose of endep(antidepressant). It really helped and no side effects. You're not a sook either- you've just gone into medical treatment overload! Am thinking of you tonight, cyber hugs.

                               luv Tonya xx

  •  I am sending big hugs , I know how you feel , I do not go to my oncologist till next week and eveytime I think about it I just can not stop crying. My surgeon thought I would be just put on tablets no chemo , but had a ph call yesterday from the hospital asking if I was going private or public for my chemo , I said I do not see my oncologist till next week  , I do not know anything about it,she said my surgeon has sent a referal , so I have no idea what is happening now  and  just burst into tears and can not control it. I look at Kath Perrin's video which is uplifting and powerful, and wish I had her strength as feel like such a woos. Just remember you are not alone we are all hear for  each other.
