Radiotherapy after Mastectomy

I am almost finished 25 radiotherapy treatments. My skin has stood up well at this point (2 treatments remaining). Thought I would post about what I did to help my skin through chemo and the radio. During Chemo I used Moo Goo double cream moisturiser (all natural and available at most Chemists) on my mastectomy area, face and neck. This helped to counteract the drying effect of chemo. I also think it helped that I always drink a lot of water. From the beginning of radiotherapy I have used R1 gel and R2 cream (available on line through Radiationcare Australia). Expensive but worth it especially if you want to do reconstruction down the track. You put the gel on within 1 hour of treatment and leave it for 20 minutes. Then you gently remove the excess and apply the cream. You put the cream on twice a day for the first couple of weeks then increase to 3 times a day. I have had radiation to neck, mastectomy area and my upper back. At this stage I have a good tan but my skin still feels soft, not itchy and not burnt! The cream also contains sun protection. Thought this info might be useful to others who are having mastectomy, chemo and radiotherapy. Deanne xx

  • Hi Deanne Well done, that cream sounds great. I finished by 25 rads on Thursday. ..I was emotional with the relief of 7 months of treatment coming to an end. I haven't been as fortunate as you, I have very fair, sensitive skin & have horrible radiation burns...very painful which I take endone for to help me sleep for the pain. Yes I was only given the sorbelene & solugel (highly recommend by the my oncologist only) &twice daily dressings which helps to keep the broken skin moist. Before dressings a salt bath on the area to clean & soothe it. I also used moo goo & sorbelene to prepare my skin months before. I hadn't heard of the gel you used either, im so happy it worked for you. Now I have my miracle cream from my oncologist silver sulfadiazine....a big tub from the hospital dispensary its only used for burn victims & so incredible. . Its only available on prescription, apparently very expensive but in 3 days I can see the broken down skin slowly healing so im feeling a little relieved at last that im on the mend.. Wishing you well, take care Jackie x

  • Hi Joanne Even the staff where I have been going for radiation have mixed feelings/recommendations about the products. They still generally recommend QV or other creams. As it is expensive, I wanted to test my own reaction before recommending it to others. Now I am confident it has worked for me I feel ok about recommending it to others. However, bear in mind I do have olive skin which generally does not burn easily, so this is another factor in my situation. I also think the months of using Moo Goo while on chemo helped to have my skin in good condition to start with. Hope your skin heals ok. The cream can be used after radiation finishes to repair the skin. On the website they show some before and after photos of burnt skin and what it heals like after using the cream. It might be of help to you now. Deanne x
  • Thanks Deanne for your post. I am starting radiation just after Christmas so will order some of the R1 gel & R2 cream. Carolyn x
