Radiation treatment

So starting radiation tomorrow for 4 weeks. Anyone going through this at the moment?

  • Hi @ ajs
because I had enormous dog ears after my mastectomy , ( fixed when I had my DIEP reconstruction) I couldn’t use the Mepitel which is the usual thing to stop getting burnt. This was applied by the nurses free of charge at the clinic I went to.
I used the strata x cream but it was not provided by the radiotherapy clinic, I had to but it online.
it’s quite expensive but did the trick for me - I had 28 sessions and my skin was hardly affected at all.
  • Cool @ajs ... we have some members in Tassie .... @TassieGrandma .... are you able to help @ajs with local support groups?  xx. I hope you are both going well xx

@SoldierCrab is also in Tassie ....

I hope to get back to Tassie some time soon ....covid & family circumstances willing ..... I am a mad keen fisho & LOVE attacking Tassie Bream!  ;)

take care & all the best with your ongoing treatment xx
  • Hello. Ask for Mepitel film or Strata XR cream. They are worn/used throughout and will prevent the skin from possible nasty and painful burns.
  • Thanks for the post! I’m from Hobart so if you know of any groups in the area that would be great to know.
  • Hi @ajs

Welcome to the club that no-one wants to join xx ...... no questions are off limits .... ask away!

I had 4 weeks of rads a few years ago now .... and was lucky to not have any 'real' issues - but I religiously lathered myself up with lotions & potions (your Rads Team will suggest their 'preferred ones' ....) just make sure you don't do it BEFORE your daily treatment ..... towards the end, I got strangely emotional, specially on the last day - as they'd almost become 'family' ..... so be prepared for that bit!!  xx

I live in a small rural community so had to travel for my treatment and can claim accommodation/fuel re treatment costs - so instead of going 100k+ every day, I chose to stay at the Cancer Institute (the hospital had a dedicated Lodge for those undergoing chemo/rads) which was a great help.   If you add your town/city/state to your profile, we may have members nearby who can help you with services that are available to you xx

Feel free to check out this post for other areas on the blog that may pique your interest - we have threads on art, craft, pets, gardens - anything that you'd like to share with us .... plus your 'story' so far ....
