Radiation treatment

Hi girls

I'm about 4 weeks into my radiation treatment; 2 weeks to go.  The skin is starting to be affected now, quite red, sore and itchy.

I resent that I still have to work through this most traumatic period in my life (and its affecting me psychologically).  I have income protection insurance but it seems that I'm still not sick enough to receive it (in an office job so can still sit on my bum all day; apparently).  Its almost laughable that I got this insurance about 5 years ago because I thought I'd probably get breast cancer one day but what a croc, I still can't claim for it.  And you have to not be working for 4 weeks before they'll pay out; well with no sick pay or holidays due, what the hell are you supposed to live on during this period?

It just sucks some times :-(

  • I don't have any solution for you but wanted to say you are justified in your frustration.  Once my skin started to feel sore there was no way I could have worked even if it was 'just sitting at a desk'.  You're right it just sucks.  It's hard to understand with all the talk of 'safety nets' that there is apparently no such thing as short term medical disability support through Centrelink -or  something similar.

On the positive side, once my skin peeled it only took about 6 - 10 days before it was fully healed.  So remember if it gets pretty bad it will not be long term.

    Take care buddy
