Radiation therapy

Hi
My first post - diagnosed with Metastatic Breast Cancer in January 2020. Have been on Chemo which is clearing the cancer from my lungs and liver, but now have spots on my brain
I am having my first Radiation therapy to the 12 tumours in my brain this week- any tips on how to cope and how to deal with the fear

  • @ddon many thanks for your thoughts and well wishes

  • Sonya, hoping you are getting thru the day. The fear of the unknown, how we will cope/ react to treatment, what’s next etc is so hard to get through. You are in our thoughts and sending a big hug xx
  • @arpie so sorry to hear you are in hospital hope everything is ok ?
     thanks again for your support

  • Good idea to see the psychologist - we are all good about physical intervention but assume that only we can handle our brains and emotions! I’ve had a much easier path through cancer than you but I found counselling (mainly about getting long term side effects when sailing through everything else) immensely helpful. Not so much about what we don’t know but about the clarity a professional stranger can bring to the tumult of feelings that we, family and friends all have. Best wishes.
  • @Sonya9  - in the meantime Just try & keep busy doing stuff you like doing (or even a jigsaw puzzle!) & hopefully, that will take your mind of it for a while ..... I've had a couple of health incidents this week (ended up at the hospital yesterday) so know that fear feeling (but fine today!) ..... our minds can be our worst enemy! :(

Take care and all the best xx

  • Hello
Thankyou @Afraser and @arpie for your comments
In regards to treatment - At this point I will be only having one rads session, then wait for the scans
I have a psychologist I will see this week , its the fear of the unknown... thats really getting to me and finding something distracting to take my mind off it
It is comforting to be able to share so thankyou both!

  • Hi @Sonya9 - I am so sorry to hear your diagnosis - but good that the chemo is working well on your lungs & liver.  xx

Maybe consider joining the private "Mets group" here - there you can discuss all issues in private with members - I'll tag @Riki_BCNA - who should be able to 'join you up'?

We have a helpline here 1800500258 that you can call & chat and maybe ask your GP for a referral to a counsellor or psychologist who may be able to give you coping strategies if you feel stressed. xx

All the best for your rads - sometimes I think the 'thought' of getting nuked can be worse than the actual procedures ..... how many sessions will you have?

    take care xx
  • And belated birthday wishes. What we all want for you is a much happier and less frightening environment for your next birthday!
  • Hi @Sonya9
Welcome to the network. Glad to hear that chemotherapy is working in regard to your lungs and liver, but I can quite understand your fear in regard to the next phase of treatment. I can’t advise, I hope someone else can provide some information before your treatment to assist you. Fear, while understandable, is not your best friend at this time. Breathe deeply, think positive, don’t anticipate problems before they really happen. They may not happen at all. Best wishes.
