Radiation following mastectomy and implant reconstruction

Hi there, I just had a mastectomy last week and an immediate reconstruction (implant) for my early cancer diagnosis of 2 lumps (1 x 13 mm and 1 x 17 mm the former was DCIS and the latter had become invasive) The sentinel node showed a triple negative BC and now the surgeon is talking about a horror range of things including removing the implant just done, mastectomy of unaffected breast and tissue reconstruction. Removal of implant he sees as important because of the need (?) for radiation therapy along with chemotherapy.  It’s all rather daunting and I’m worried he’s throwing everything at it but maybe not entirely necessary???

  • Your surgeon knows the details of your tumour and what is likely to be required to give you the best chance. TNBC usually requires chemo, as there are no targeted treatments for it, as there are for hormone receptor positive or her2 positive tumours.
Talk to your surgeon, listen, ask lots of questions. Same with the radiation & medical oncologists. Take someone with you to appointments.  They will pick up on different things that you may miss or not take in.
Have you ordered a My Journey kit? Have you had contact with a Breast Care nusre you could also talk to?
    Take care,
