Radiation burns
Hi to anyone reading this,
I am hoping for some advice. I have just finished 5 weeks of radiation treatment (following left breast removal) and am suffering quite badly from burns, especially across the top of the treatment area, and a large infected area under my arm. I have been on antibiotics for over two weeks now with no obvious improvement to the infection. Now the skin across my breastbone is cracked and weepy and I just can't get comfortable or soothe it for long.
I know I'm not the only one suffering this, I just wonder if anyone has found anything more helpful than I have been able to locate. The clinic nurses recommended either Moo Goo or Dermaveen. I have been using the Moo Goo and it is soothing for a brief period, but as soon as it is absorbe the skin just cracks again and it doesn't seem to have any healing effect. I gave the Dermaveen a go this morning and nearly went through the roof, it was like pouring acid on my skin. Obviously should not be recommended for cracked or open skin. I am at my wits end, and they tell me I can expect it to continue to worsen for two weeks after treament finished. Any suggestions welcome.
I have the utmost respect for all the staff at my treatment centre, but having been questioned and examined by the nurses frequently during treatment (and when I did not have these painful burns) I now have no recourse to them now that I need them. Why do we not get follow up appointments weekly or fortnightly until the reaction settles down? My GP is very sypmathetic but not particularly experienced with this treatment.
Thanks for reading,
Cheers, Vicki
