Public vs South Africa

I have not even got biopsy results yet but by all accounts from ultrasound it is all bad. Also just found out that our private insurance will not cover anything as Breast Cancer is not an emergency! so I will be in the public sytem in Melbourne unless I hop on a plane and fly to South Africa (where we know no-one) as we (my husband and kids) are currently living in Zambia. Would the private system in South Africa noing no-one be better than staying here in public surrounded by family? I am thinking not - but my husband is reminding me that this is time critical. Brain in a whrrr

  • Hi there. I am going through the public system. I have had surgery, chemo and herceptin through box hill hospital. I did pay $400 out of pocket expenses to have radiotherapy done at ring wood private, but that was because it was more convenient for me. I cannot fault the care I have received. I have had 3 unscheduled stays in hospital as well due to side effects. I have not had to wait for more than a week or two for things to be done. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend going publicly. You will need the support of those closest to you as well. Hang in there and good luck. Karen xox
  • I went through the private system in Brisbane.  One of my friends went through the public system earlier.  She had absolutely no complaints.  Breast cancer is fast tracked through the system and it's free!  the only thing with the public system is you don't get to choose your hospital or doctor as you can on the private system, but the care is still the same and so is the treatment.  Have a think about giving it a go like Sarah54 suggests above - you will need the support of friends around you.
