Post surgery drains

I’m home after anxillary lymph node removal and lumpectomy reconstruction. I’m feeling remarkably good - zero pain, home after two nights - except I HATE the drains. I’ve never been great at things in my body and these are really messing with me psychologically. I know I have to wait til there is less than 20ml fluid but any tips for getting to that magic point faster?
  • ... and don't be surprised if you get down to the magic number to find more the following day.  We just have to let our bodies work at their own pace - and that is not always the pace we'd like.
    Hope you are coping OK.
  • On average, drains are usually taken out after about a week.Unfortunately they are a necessary pain after surgery.Take it easy and don’t overdo it.
  • Aren't they vile? Horrible creepy little handbag things. The sensation of catching one of the tubes on the tap handle in the shower...Gargh!!!

I'm an A grade 'leaker' so I've had to lug drains around for extended periods.

My surgeon grimly suggested I was exceptionally irritable which accounted for the volumes of fluid I've produced every time I've had to deal with them. Irritable. I'll give him irritable.

Find a nice bag to put them in and try to ignore them if you can. There is no speeding the process up. Believe me. I've tried.
  • @Tillycat
You need to allow your body time to heal.....deep breaths!
    Take care
  • Hi @Tillycat, sorry no replies yet. I have not had drains but I have had so many surgical procedures and a variety of recoveries. In my experience there is no quick fix but things tend to go much better if you follow all the instructions you are given by your medical team.  Good luck with your recovery.
