portocath

Hi there,

I am soon to start 4 chemos followed by Herceptin over 12 months. My oncologist has recommended a portocath. I am a bit reluctant about this and am curious as to whether most women who are on herceptin choose to have the portocath or not? thanks,

Merryl

  • I say go for it too. I have 6 lots of chemo and 12 months herceptin and I highly recommend a port. The girls dont have to go looking for veins and digging around They just hook up and voila.Plus it makes chemo faster as it goes straight into your right ventricle of your heart and not have to travel all around your body first. Takes me four hours instead of all day for chemo.

But its up to you. Some people get Picc lines some get ports. Ports are hidden under your skin and picc lines you have to watch you donet get infections and showering and swimming  can be a prob.

If I had the choice again I would still choose Portacath.

    Take Care  ChrissyD xo :)

  • go for it!!..was a simple procedure to insert, then i don't have to worry about them finding a vein every 3 weeks...i have just completed 12 months of hercepting (along with 8 doses of chemo initially too)..and am in for the long haul...secondary cancer means ongoing treatment...all is going well and the port makes everything much simpler for the girls at the chemo unit and they take bloods thru the port whenever necessary too...great!! especially if u have had nodes removed and 1 arm is compromised...happy to talk further if u wish..good luck  :)
