Port

Hi Ladies
I have a port which was inserted in Sept 2016. I have six weekly taxol sessions to go. My query is related to an odd sensation I get in my neck and under my chin. Sometimes feels puffy/swollen. Not painful, almost feels numb with a definite change in sensation from the rest of my neck. I have no swallowing or breathing difficulties, it's really just annoying. Curious if anyone else has experienced this??
Cheers Joanne

  • Hi Joanne. I have a port. It was first put in 1 year ago and I will keep it for another 2 years. Have you mentioned this sensation to your chemo nurses? Not sure how long you have been experiencing this but changes in sensation can sometimes be a sign of a blood clot developing. You should definitely mention it and if the side of your face gets puffy (especially in the morning) but then goes away a little while later in the day, or you feel like you have bad sinusitis I would get checked out immediately. Chances are it's just fine but it's easy enough to have it checked out. They can do an ultrasound of the neck which will show if there is a clot and then give you meds or a CT guided high powered flush (this doesn't hurt at all). If you're concerned give your chemo unit a call. Good luck with it!

  • I had that without a port. There are a lot of lymph nodes around your neck and under the jaw. Mine went away by itself whatever it was. My motto is if it lasts longer than two weeks, get it checked out.
