Port and sore arm

Has any one else had a sore shoulder and arm after the insertion of a port. It has been two weeks since surgery and my shoulder is really sore and my arm aches. When the port was used (2 days ago) I was tender in my arm pit also. The nurses said it was probably just because it’s only new. I would love to hear someone else has had a similar experience and that it will get better. In 2 weeks I start 12 weekly cycles of pacclitaxol.

  • Thanks Beryl. Turns out I have pulled a muscle across my chest - saw my GP who said this does happen. Panadol and stop worrying about it. Port is working fine.
  • Hi Nicole - my port has been in for six years. I have not experienced any discomforts. Have you been able to speak with a Breast Cancer nurse? I would do this if it hasn't eased within a few days. Take paracetamol if it hurts. xBeryl
  • Thanks Kath. It helps to know it’s normal for it to be uncomfortable. I have found rubbing where it is sore is helping. I will try with a pillow and see if that helps.

  • Hi. I'm sorry I missed your post. I was quite tender on the chest wall where the port was stitched in and high on the collar bone where the tubing goes over the top then into the vein. It took quite a while to settle. I found sleeping with a flat pillow which I hugged really helped as it stopped your chest folding in on it. These days I still have my port...2 years on...and I have a soft toy I use instead of a pillow.

On the OR table your arms are outstretched so wondering if that may have caused some soreness?  Im not sure how long but it was a few weeks before it didn't hurt  and the port site always felt a little tender after use. I still have it flushed now but it doesn't hurt like it did during chemo.

    Hope tjis helps. Kath x
