Ouch

Hi Sophie, I finished Taxol back in late June. I found with my fingernails they started getting sore in about the 6-7 week mark. The first three fingers then started to get red spots which got bigger then turned black, lifted and the black changed to a yellowish white. I haven't lost any nails but they have all been very sore. My toenails have also been affected as well. Now almost six months after finishing Taxol they are slowly returning to normal. I have been taking Swisse Hair skin and nails as well putting Sally Hansen Miracle Cure on when I remember and also a Vitamin E that can be painted on which absorbs into the nail. Arrrh yes. The sore fingernails. I remember them being sore during Docetaxel. As well as my hands feeling burnt and the skin peeling. Fortunately I didn't lose my fingernails but they had really bad ridges across them, one for each of the cycles. But I lost all my toenails one by one, first they lifted off the nail beds and then they peeled away. The last two have just gone now, six months after I finished chemo. However, only the first two to go were painful, they went in the month following chemo so I guess the others were sufficiently grown out before they went too and already had a new nail growing underneath. I rubbed vitamin E cream in my hands constantly during Docetaxel and used nail hardener too. I really didn't think about my toenails until it was too late. Oh well. Look after yourself Sophie. My fingernails were sore when I had Docetaxel, a similar drug to taxol. They ended up with ridges which are growing out now. I never lost any but my thumbnails had dark patches for a while. I just kept them short and used nail hardner to strengthen them. I also used Vit E oil on them and kept my hands well moisturized. Take care. Deanne xxx
