Well I'm an old hardcore skydiver. Imagine if I'd had a student who was going for their first jump and I offered them two rigs, one with a reserve parachute and one without, and explained to them that the one without was much lighter, less bulky and easier to wear. If they asked what the benefit of the one with the reserve over the one without was, and I replied, "Well, I think the one with the reserve is a bit of overkill myself. 99% of the time, the main parachute opens and the reserve is never needed....I still guess they would all choose the less comfortable one, even for only a 1% benefit. You wouldn't want to be plummeting to earth at 270km per hour, grabbing air and with a bundle of tangled washing behind you, wishing you had the reserve would you?
