organ donation

Hey ladies.

I have a question and i hope that i am not being insensitive by asking it....

There has been a lot of press recently on organ donation and changing the current process of opting in to automatic donation unless you opt out. It has made me think about something...are those that have had breast cancer able to donate their organs?

Does anyone know?

  • Hi Di,

I think you may need to give them a call and have a chat. The answer may not be online as it maybe case by case and it may be different across the states.

  • Ann-Marie,

I had a look at the link, but I did not see the answer to this question, maybe I missed it!  Has anyone else found the answer?

  • Thanks for that information Vicky, it's a starting point for what I've been wondering.

    Take care, Lyn

  • Hello ladies,

I was a regular blood donor before I was diagnosed with bc. I cannot donate blood until I am 5 years cancer free. When I discussed it with the blood donor clinic, my impression was it had more to do with me being given the best chance of recovery rather than there being a problem with my blood.

  • Thanks for the link Ann-Marie. I have my surgeon and oncologist appointments before christmas and intend to bring it up with both of them to see what they say. I also thought about blood donations.

I will let you all know.

    Enjoy the weekend ladies????

  • Thanks, Maryrose, for asking the question & getting the conversation started. It would seem to be something many of us wonder about. I have long since advised my family that I am comfortable with any of my organs being donated, but am unsure about whether it will be possible now.

Thanks Anne-Marie for the link, I'll be checking it out.

    Take care all, Lyn

  • Hi Maryrose,

Here is the website to find out what you are looking for - http://www.donatelife.gov.au/home. You will find in the bottom right hand corner your local Donatelife Agency in your state.

I suggest getting in contact with the them.

  • This is a question I also had. I recently saw a optometrist who said I could donate my corneas. I was chuffed ??.

  • I would also like to know if we can be organ donors after having had cancer, beside breast cancer I also have had skin cancer including melanoma.  Also what about blood donation?

Hi Maryrose, that's an interesting one and I agree, something to discuss. I believe that we should all have a choice with what happens with our end of life wishes. If you are treated for cancer, and then declared "cancer free" after 5 years, it would be reasonable to think that it would be safe to donate your organs if you have an accidental death and it is on your licence that you are an organ donor. I have definitely discussed organ donation and other end of life wishes with my husband and 2 adult children. If I can ale a difference to someone's life by donating my organs on my passing, I would think that this was giving a gift to somebody who is struggling with their health and would otherwise struggle to live. A local man in our little community has recently died from a terminal lung disease, he was ready for a transplant, and the donated lungs were found to have cancer, and the transplant could not go ahead, he passed away a short time later. Another lady in our community struggled with heart disease, however had a heart transplant that was successful and is leading a healthy life now. I really think that his is a healthy discussion to have with our treatment teams, and would be interested in the concluding response. Warm wishes, Trace ????????
